HOB laser stick .10
Last night one of our clubmembers had a 'garage cleanout' sale after our monthly meeting and I was able to get a few new items at rock-bottom prices (Geez, I sound like a crazy eddie's commercial). One item I got was an unopened laser stick .10 kit from HOB. It's just laser cut wood, an instruction book, and a little hardware. For $5, who could resist? Anyway, I'm just wondering if any of you guys have had one of these in the past. It looks like a scaled down ultrastick, so I'm hoping that it will build into a little, capable, no-worries flyer--am I on the mark here? Looks like it should be an easy build and fly.

RE: HOB laser stick .10
yeah, they fly fine. same series as their spacewalker and floatplane. no plans needed, interlocking construction. good flier on a norvel 15; light and powerful, very stick-like.

RE: HOB laser stick .10
Would this be a viable option as a sort of glow park flyer? Especially if I didn't over power the plane? I have a HUGE schoolyard at the end of my street (actually, a schoolyard and a couple baseball fields), and I'd really like something that I could fly down there every once in a while, but just don't want to go electric.

eh, an os 10 will fly it o.k. if that's what you already have. I prefer a norvel 074 to the 10 as it is lighter. but the 10 will work; it just has the power of the 074 and the weight of the 15. But have flown the os 10's in h.o.b. stuff years ago and they work. but I would spend the 55.00 and get a norvel 15.

beardking, If you want a glow parkflyer try a Ace Grasshopper, you can put a .049 on it,and it would be perfect in a small space.
Norvel has a deal on non throttle .049s for $27
you can find the Ace planes at quantummodels.com

Well, I guess it looks like I'm not going to be going with a glow park flyer. I just really wanted something that looked moderately decent (for some reason I REALLY like stiks) and flew well. The grasshopper might fit the flying part, but I just don't like how it looks. Guess I'll just have to renew my membership at the field in the town next to me.

The Half A Stick plan from RCM (plan # 607-B)would make a good .049 park flyer also.
It uses a Ace foam wing.

Dsegal,
That there is a nice looking plane! I cannot figure out why your thread didn't come up before--I searched for info on the laser stick before starting this thread--oh, well. How has it held up so far, now that you've had a month or so to fly it?

Thanks for your comments. The search engine here is quite unreliable and often misses things. I love the Stick and I think the .15LA engine is perfect for it. People in my club consider me a bit odd for flying small models but they are amazed to see how well the Stick flies. They expect anything that size to be "squirrely". But a lesson I learned a few years ago is that a model with a long tail moment arm that does not have over-sized control surfaces will be a steady flyer. I think that leaving off the landing gear makes the plane a lot faster.

Dave,
I know what you mean about the other guys at the club thinking you're strange for flying small stuff. I have a little 26" span aileron/elevator/throttle control funfly electric called a wasp, which runs on a 3 cell lithium and the IPS motor from a tiger moth. The guys with the .60 size caps and ultrasticks drop their jaws when they see me launch this and climb out straight up for 100' or so, torque rolling, then dive back down and make a rolling pass through field center--and I'm not even that good a pilot! That's the sort of thing that's attracting me back to 1/2a. I'll have to decide when I build the laser stick whether or not to use LG, but you've given me some food for thought on that--it might help out a little if I am going to use the .10.

I have a scratch built .10-.15 sized stik. I patterned it off of the old Pilot Gas Stik 10. I built it with balsa sides instead of the 1/8 ply sides. I have an old Magnum .15 on the nose and it has about 85-90%power to weight. I have two alieron servos so I can have flaperons. Ready to fly it is just over 2 pounds. It has a take off roll of 6-7 feet then a climb out like a home sick angle.
One of the guys I fly with thought it was my .40 sized Lucky stik with a Magnum .52 in the nose. He could not belive that I was able to get that kind of flying out of a SMALL plane like that. I flew it 6 or 7 times that day and did not go through half a gallon of 15% fuel. He went through almost two gallons with his .91, 60 powered planes.
To save a little weight, try running the ultra lite foam wheels. The three I have weight less then the rubber ones I was going to run.
