Default .061 or .09?

In the Super Cub + Texaco thread we were discussing using an .061 or .09. I decided to start a separate thread to see what others think about this topic.

My preference would be the .09 because those Cubs had a fairly wide nose and I like the idea of an extra 1" of prop hanging in the wind.

It is my contention that an .09 is physically only slightly larger than an .061 and in some cases like a specific engine line, they are exactly the same size. DC "Spitfire" .06 and DC "Sabre" .09 are but one example.

To illustrate my point, here are comparison shots.

1) G-Mark .061 R/C & Cox TD .09 R/C

3) MP-Jets .061 R/C diesel & A-M .09 R/C diesel

The AM 15 is a very small .09. Put it next to a PAW of the same capacity and see the difference.

The extra inch of prop would certainly be handy.

John,

I was just looking at my PAW .061 and said "Now watch someone bring up the difference in size between the PAW .061 and the .09." That didn't take long.

Yes, the PAW .061 is small, it is the same size as the PAW .049. It is an exception to what I was trying to show with the two A-M's. Also, check the .061 against the .09 in other lines like Allbon, FROG, D-C, and the JB "Atom & Bomb."

The point is that the .09 is only slightly larger in the nose of a model and it can swing a longer prop.

I have many engines smaller than .09 but for flying I like the practical "User Friendly" attitude of the .09's.

Agreed with all of that. I was pointing out that the AM .09 is quite a lot smaller and lighter than the PAW .09.

I like 1.5cc diesels, probably over most of the others, except maybe my sideports. The .09s are the most useable of the lot. I have a couple of .09 models flying (or close...) at the moment, a semi-scale Airacobra, and an Airsail Voltimer. The Voltimer is a 46" high wing psuedo old-timer kit which is aimed at the beginners Speed 400 market. It's a bit heavy, lumbering and slow. When I built it I was hoping to use my PAW .049 Vintage but this combination proved to be underpowered. So in went a PAW .09BR - heaps of power, 8*6 prop, tootles around just off idle. The Airacobra was originally built for a Cox Queen Bee. Maybe a Norvel .061 or 074 would fly it but I don't have one of those. What will fit however is the AM .09. Very usefully sized engine with good power.

John,

One day I was trying to figure out which of my .09's was the smallest. I think it was the Hungarian ALAG. The AH Dooling Jr. 09 also has a very low profile.

I'll dig out some engines later and take some comparison shots. I think the German Wilo was small too.

In .06 engines I'd have to go with the PAW, Alag and OS.

John,

I just realized I posted picures of the small 1.0cc engines a while back.

Here is a large 1.0cc (DC Spitfire) compared to three contenders for smallest 1.0cc engine.

1) DC Spitfire
2) Alag X5
3) OS 06
4) Paw 1.0

They are all shown in identical size boxes.

Interesting Dan. Thanks! The littlies - 049 and 06 are very appealing, maybe not as useable as the 1.5cc engines, but cute still quite useful.
