scatch built .049 plane
hey guys, this is the first time ive tried any 1/2a stuff. i couldnt find quickie 200 plans, so i just started making my own plane...it came out good considering i had no plan ahead of time. i flew it yesterday once (maiden flight) and it was awesome, i was suprised. it has a 32 inch wingspan, about 30 inches long including the engine, cox killer bee .049 w/ a 5x3 prop 2 bms 306 micro servos (6grams each), a berg 5dsp recever, and a 4 cell 400mah pack. i dont have a scale but i think its about 12 to 13 ounces. yesterday there was a 5 to 10 mph wind, upwind it was fast, downwind it hauled *****, easily 60+.
its fun i cant wait to fly it again, i need to get some more aileron throws too, it has a slow roll rate. i think some of it is due to the trailing edge at the hinge line being so much thicker then the aileron...i guess thats what happens when you dont plan stuff though. im thinking about making a new wing sometime and putting some thought into it, plus that one is not finished all that nicely.

ha, well the firewall is just flat on the fuse, so its neutral unless i built crooked. and the airfoil, well i just kind of drew that, its semi semetrical
..its cool when stuff just seems to work out alright..

Pencil,
Great looking ship you built yourself. Are you still looking for the Quickie 200? I think I have the plans around here someplace.
Later,
Tim

Very nice effort. Is this your first original design?
The ailerons would be more effective if they extended further out to the tips. And you're right about the need for them to blend better with the wing but the key aspect is they should extend out further for more effective control. Racers at high speed often don't want the model to be too responsive so they use the inboard style and often only use one aileron (racers only turn one way for the most part).
If you replace the ailerons make them go all the way to the tip or at most leave just an inch of fixed tip trailing edge. That'll sharpen it up.
Also you may want to try a 5x4 for more speed. If it seems to lug the engine cut it down to 4.5 x 4.

RE: scatch built .049 plane
thanks, yes this is my first original design, other then electric foamies.
the ailerons i used were from the first wing i made, and i figured id use them for this one too and just make them inboard. if i ever build a new wing i will make them larger and make the wing TE the right size.
i also have a 5.7 3 apc prop that ill try sometime, but the enging has only had about 10 to 15 minutes of run time on it total, so i havent even leaned it out all the way.
one thing i forgot, what do i do with the tank backpressure line? will it create a suction in the tank with the line open in the wind and lean it out?
thanks everyone for you input
