Default Quality of HOB Kits?

I was looking at getting the HOB FW-190 kit but since I have never seen anything from them before I'm not sure what to expect from thier kit. I havent built a balsa plane in quite a while, I think the last one was a Guillows Cessna 172 or somthing like that. The main thing is that I dont want to spent like 50 or 60 dollars or whatever it is, just to find out I cant do anything with it. Any input you guys have would be appreciated.

Thanks
Dustin

I've got the HOB Spacewalker that I built a year or so ago. Quality was excellent . I don't know the winspan of teh FW 190; however if it's in the 32 - 40" range, a Norvel .074 with 4 HS81 servos and a 350 mah NiMH battery and small Rx should do fine.

Dustin,

I have the ME 109, P 47 and the .20 AT 6 waiting their turn on the building board, I have also completed the P 51 and the 2x2 glider. I have always had a good experence with their kits. I recommend HOB without any reservation.

Wow, thanks for the quick replies. Are the kits entirely balsa, or are there some fiberglass parts too? Would one of you mind posting a pic of the kit out of the box. I do like the look fo the completed models, they dont look way out of scale like some of the other stuff that size. What level of pilot skill would be required to fly somthing like that.

Thanks
Dustin

The Spacewalker is entirely balsa/some lite ply with a stringer turtledeck. It flies very well with the Norvel .074. If you have flown anything with ailerons, you should be able to fly it . I can't speak for the other kits. Mine's 1800 miles away, and entirely assembled, so no kit to show [:@] .

Im working with the HOB Stealth Sport kit. It is going together very smoothly. Good instructions, well cut wood, no missing parts!

The 1/2A HOB warbirds have a combo canopy and turtle deck to speed up building. The rest is all wood. I have built (2) 1/2A P-51s and the T-6. They are great kits, easy to built and great fliers.

I was reading in another thread somthing about some high performance "Nelson" motors. Would somthing like that be OK for this kit?

If you are looking for the 1/12th scale, I use to run an OS .10FP and needed to "shoehorn" this
into my HOB 1/12th P-51. We had ten guys at a previous club fly pylon with these small Mustangs. Nine of us used the OS .10, the tenth guy ran a Cox TD.09 and he was the fastest by a good margin. I am currently thinking of getting another of these Mustangs and the Norvel .074. However, if you have access to a TD .09 and noise is not an issue, I would go with the .09. Otherwise, buy the Norvel .074 as it would make a great setup.

Astrovanin,

HOB made some neat Quarter Midget .15 racers back in the late 70's and early '80's.

I still have a "Miss Dara" and two "Shoestring" kits. These were for the high performance .15's of that time, the Supertigre G.15, the K&B .15s, Taipan .15, Rossi .15 and Cox .15.

The wings were built on two fiberglass arrow shafts.

You will need a shoehorn for the .074 too

here's a pic of my HOB Spacewalker. I used an old enya .19 I,ve had for years so it's heavy and you need to keep the speed up. Still it's an excellent flyer. As john Noted the .074 Norvel would be a better choice for this plane. Also heres a pic of the turtle deck John spoke of.

Astrovanin,

Cox doesnt make the .09 engines anymore. At least I dont think they do. You can usualy find one new in the box on Ebay however and pick the thing up for 30-50 bucks. A TD .09 or a Medalion .09 would work. Ocasionaly you can find a Medalion with a throttle ring listed.

The Norvel 074 will fit in the allotted space for the Cox. I re-drew the plan for Don back about 2001. The Norvel will stick out a bit further than the Cox did though and the muffler will cause another problem by bumping into the firewall. Also watch out and pay attention to the C.G. on this model, as it is easy to get nose heavy and you will pay for that at landing.

I've built about 6 of the HOB T-6's (we race them with .25 motors). They are diecut and the instructions are minimal, more like steps than actual instructions. If you want an easy build that will teach you a lot of building tips the Sig kits are great, 4 Star and Somethin Extra.

All the T-6's I built were identacle out of the box and the wood was always good quality. If you have basic building skills the planes are easy and the only glue recomended on the T-6 is CA so you can go as fast as you like.

Keep these planes light and they are a lot of fun to fly.

I found a couple COX .09 on eBuy, should be able to get both with any luck. Looks like somone went to town polishing one of them, all chromie, woo. I need a motoe for the 1/2A trainer too so I figured if I got both I'd be set for the pair of them.

Mclintock,

Thanks for sharing. Does the kit come with covering or do you have to supply it?

I know I dont even have the plane yet, but I thought this was too good to pass up. [link=http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=5959132254&ssPage Name=STRK:MEWA:IT]MVVS .15[/link]

Uncas,
The kit does not come with covering, I think they used monocote in the directions..
With all the sheeting on the fuse and the plastic top deck thing, I was thinking this model would be a good canditate for fiberglass and paint..
The open areas of the wings would need to be something else though. Silkspan?
I love the smell of solvents and dope etc..

Astrovannin, that mvvs is sweet- I almost bought one of those years ago in prague, but bought a .21 instead.. Have yet to run it.
Morris hobbies can probably get the pipe or muffler for you, or carlson engine imports. Ed carlson is still in business, just his web site is toast for now. One of these HOB 1/12 birds with that mvvx .15 will not be for the timid. You may wanna look for a sig seniorita to put it in for a while first. Or scale up the lst and lighten the rear end..

Ha ha ha, so now I have a motor for a plane that I dont, and no motor for the plane on the board (LST). Oh well, it will be a while before I'm done anyways. Say, I wonder if the HOB kit could be converted to a FW-190D9

Now you've discovered the joy of RC-
excuses!
You now have an excuse to buy another kit or the wood for a .15 sized plane, and an engine or two for the planes you lack an engine for.
I came quite close to getting a helicopter because I accidently bought a helicopter transmitter (thinking it was an airplane tx {JR century 7}). Never happened, great excuse anyway.

Now thats a justification if I've ever heard one. I'n not really a heli fan, but there was some pics on one in the scale forums that I really liked. I just dont like the blob "generic" ones.

I'l probably just go with a cheapo motor for the trainer, mabey like an OS .10 LA series or somthing. Those COX .09s are expensive, I paid like half for my .15 MVVS than what the .09s were going for.
