RE: Cox Radial
i have to agree, this is really really cool. i would love to see a kit on how to make one of these or see some really good measurements off what one of these can pull. i love radials, but they are so damn expensive and seem to be only for those who really want the scale look, not for those who are looking for a good performing plane, but if these can deliver, hell ya.

I know it's been a while, but has anyone been able to get pics of the inards. How does the "master crank" work, are all the rods connected to one journal? Beautiful engine.

RE: Cox Radial
I had the privilege of meeting Ralph and spending some time with him at his table at the Perry Swap Meet this past February. After about 1 minute you realize how brillant of a micro machinist and master modeler he really is. He showed me his scrapbook of his projects and his ideas about building .049 size pre-WWI French designs including rotary engines like the LeRhone and early centrifugal superchargers.
He seemed to be frustrated that he could build any design in 1/2A but the machine time and his labor at even $1 per hour would drive the cost of those intricate designs so high that only well heeled collectors could possibly buy them and they would not be used to fly.
I got a kick out of his 1/2A radial master rod key chain.
Have talked to him several times over the Spring and Summer and he suffers from a severe chronic illness that gives him a lot of pain and handicaps his ability to make his hands do what his brillant mind dreams up.
Ralph Barnette is one of those few guys whose brillance is matched by his equally nice personality.................Steve

RE: Cox Radial
Would he be up for maybe designing some plans or drawings of this master piece? If so, he could always sell the plans. It could be a "radial scratch build" if you will. Just a thought.

RE: Cox Radial
Hello All,
This is my first post here. I've had an interest in building an .049 based radial for some time and found this site while Googling for info.
Is there still any interest in building a few of these? I would love to get a bit of the collective knowledge of the board to help with the design. Or, better yet, get the original motor to reverse engineer.
I'm a certified manufacturing engineer and own a small tool and die shop. I'd like to build at least one for myself but if sufficient interest exists, I'll produce it with an eye toward a small production run down the road.
Regards,
Walt

I'm afraid they had to remove one of Ralph's legs below the knee. Good news is when he gets his prosthetic(?) one and gets through his therapy he should be able to get around a lot better. He is in the Memphis Baptist East Hospital. He loves to talk so give him a call. The hospital # is 901-226-5000. His room # is 1431 but of course that could change, especially when he starts therapy.

Happy New Year guys. My best Friend built an 4cly flat 049. many years ago. He was an engneer. He passed away 11 years ago and some sorry people stole some of his engines By the way I have owned a TD .010, and a TD.020 since they first came out and need a tank for the .010. I still have glow plugs for the .010. Anybody still sell parts for these engines. BOB MOORE 6559

RE: Cox Radial
I've just stumbled upon this thread.....and have read back through the whole dialogue.....I have been searching the web...and these forums for any information, engineering drawings or good photos for 3 and 5 piston r/c radial engines. I have finally found this thread!!...great!!!
Hopefully Ralph is on the mend (best wishes for a speedy recover Ralph!)...and I am watching with great anticipation for some of 01Sporty's engine plans. Does anyone have any radial engine plans?....or know of a source for purchasing these items? Seems they are difficult to find ...BUT do exist. I would love to hear from anyone that can point me in the right direction.
again many thanks.....and I will stay tuned with this thread as it develops....

RE: Cox Radial
teddiepos10.....many thanks!!!....just had a quick look at the cnc forum.....exactly where I should be looking.....I am gearing up the workshop with tools and equip to tackle a build of a 3-5 piston radial..it will be a VERY BIG learning curve for me....but i am one of those that will have a go a challenge like this.
again thanks for the links.....will see where it takes me...and of course post here when i get myself underway with the project.

http://www.google.com/patents?vid=USPAT6062176
This patent is for a model airplane engine 2 stroke radial. C Lee did a review in RCM of it.

RE: Cox Radial
hi skaliwag...
The idea i have is generally.....I want to build a radial engine (or two) for my 1/4 and 1/3 (WW1) scale airplanes. The idea of just going and buying ready made stuff does not appeal to me. Sure - i will end up paying more for the engineering equipment etc...will spend lots of time building....BUT i figure i will learn a hell of a lot of stuff along the way by building a 3 or 5 piston radial engine. The sizes I suppose will need to be in keeping generally with the scale of the aircraft...I suppose as a starting point something that can give me around ...say from 25cc to 45cc??...something like that.
My aim will be to try and make most (if not all) part myself. I understand this will be a big undertaking but i am keen as mustard and trying to get as much knowledge of the tasks ahead under my belt.
So any help or guidance would be greatly welcome......seems hunting down plans is as rear as finding hens teeth!!!!!
cheers
