Default HELP HS-55 problems

I have an HS-55 servo in the wing of my 1/2a pylon racer which up to now has worked great. The servo now does not respond to any input from the radio it just whines( it sounds like the motor is spinning but the arm doesn't move). I thought the gears might be stripped but it still moves just not when I want it to. The receiver is fine because the elevator servo still works like it is supposed to. Does anyone have any idea what my problem might be? any info would be very helpful.

Default hmmmm.....

As cheap as they are, I think it would be best to pull it and replace it. Personally, I would rather replace an $18 servo than a whole airframe.

I would also suggest you replace it with something with more torque and stronger construction.
The little 55 is really designed as a park flyer servo. Not really made for the forces of a high perf 1/2A. I am currently using both the Hitec HS81, and the Futaba S133/s3101 in my half a racers and running them with good results. (in fact, I have been using the s133's in my 1/2A racers for many years, and have yet to strip or break one, I just end up retiring them as throttle servos on bigger planes!)

Best Regards

Default Determine what's broke, first !

Unplug the elevator servo ( you said it is working just fine ) and plug the suspect aileron servo in to the receiver's elevator socket . If the servo now operates okay, I would suspect that there might be a problem with the receiver . If, on the other hand the servo still doesn't work then it's obviously the servo.

If your brave enough open up the servo and look for things like cold solder joints ( common cause ) , broken wire lead and the possibility that the feedback pot wipers are dirty . Also look at the male plug end . These will pull loose and not make contact .
Good luck and let us know what you find .

Default HELP HS-55 problems

I'd say it's a stripped gear. If 1 or 2 teeth ar stripped the servo will act exactly as you described. The motor will spin until the arm is moved slightly causing the gears to engage and the servo will work... until it is stopped on the broken tooth again.

Default HELP HS-55 problems

Oops i found the problem, it was a very small cut on one of the wires right by the male plug. I spliced it back together and it works great. Just to be sure everything was alright I took it apart and found no broken gears or any other problems. I myself have a set of HS-81s and I have loved them, I took them out of a glider I had and put them aside for a while. I lately checked one of the 81s and it worked but it was real slow, it would move very slowly even if I moved the stick real fast. anybody experience this before or have any ideas what went wrong with this servo?(i'm having a bad week with my servos) Thanks for all the help about the 55.

Default does size matter?

So your using those small 55 size servos and not having any problems with on your plane. I was told they would be too small to run on my 1/2 a plane and that they were for electric planes.

Also I was curious what the going rate for those hs 81s are. I have been getting them from Hobby people for about $20. I am also using the feature receiver I got with a radio. I have to get some more servos and anothe receiver for my new plane very soon.

thanks

Default Servo's

Hi Guy's....

I've been using the 55's in my pylon ships for two season's with no problems. I use the old duralite 800 ma battery, 6 V, weighs 1.2 oz. 6v on the 55's they are pretty torquie and fast. But I was at my LHS the other day and they had the Cirrus 21's for $15.95 ea. Good servo. wt .33 oz, ball bearing, 19 oz. torque so I picked up a couple. I had a set quite a while ago and they were flawless. Several people sell them under their own brand. There made by GWS.
Skimmer, if your servo is slowing down, check your battery voltage, could be looooow.... Rgds, Jeff......

Default HELP HS-55 problems

Like Jeff I have had no problems with the 55s in this plane, but it is fairly new and only has about 10 flights on it. I like the 55s because they weigh about half as much as the 81 and they seem to do well in my plane. I got my 55s for about $20 each and I am very happy with them. About the battery question, I plugged the 81 into a few different planes and with different batteries and I had no change in speed, I have no idea what is wrong with it, any ideas?
