Default Help recognizing/Rebuilding a TeeDee?

Hi,
I was at a club Auction yesterday and had some extra $$ floating around in my wallet, so I picked up this TeeDee. The first thing that the astute observer will notice in the rear shot is a tap. I've never seen one on these engines, nor the blue anodized plate. Was this a pressure tap? And, if so, why not use the pressure tap that was available on the side of the engine case?

In the side shot, you'll notice that it does not have a Needle Valve or a Spring. Are these still available somewhere? And if so, where can I get one of them?

I'm not sure if I'm going to sink money into this engine or not. I might just keep it for parts for my other TeeDee....

Thanks for any info that you can provide,

Bob

Bob,

The backplate pressure tap is better than the timed pressure from the tap on the side. That rear tap is an after market piece. As for the NVA you can still get them from Cox but if you are running pressure then you will need a fine thread NVA and they are getting pretty hard to find. I hear Texas Timers has some still.

LAter,
Tim

Thanks... I can't seem to find the Cox site (unless it's on the Estesrockets.com site). They don't list any parts.

I also went to TexasTimers but saw no listing of the fine-thread NVA.

The more that I see this, the more that I think I should just leave it alone, or sell it. To get this engine into shape, I'd need to buy a standard NVA and backplate, or a fine-thread NVA to go with the tapped backplate, which would probably cost just as much. I bought it on a whim anyway.

I might check my LHS, but these engines are 20 years old... probably no parts available locally.

Thanks for giving me the info... you gave me a fighting chance...

Bob

I can get a Cox .09 for $29.95.

Either that, or I forgot to upload the photos.... Here, lemme try to get this right.... DUH!

And, it looks like the previous owner rotated the NVA around 180-degrees.

Ha, ha brilliant I have the exact same engine and don't know what the heck it is. I was just putting it in a zip lock to send it to Cox for ID and service (well not any more)

The only two parts you need are the fine thread needle and a galbreath head. Both are upgrades you'd want for a brand new TD. A new-in-box TD ain't worth it's weight in salt to me. A few upgrades and you have a fine engine.

What's a galbreath Head and where do I find them? I presume that I'd need the fine-thread NVA, right?

Bob,

All you need is the needle itself and a plain backplate. I am sure I has those parts in my oddball parts box someplace. If you will use them and really fly something with that engine they'er yours for the taking.

Tim

For the love of all that's holy..why would you send the engine back to Estes. There is more Cox experts here on this forum than you will find today at Estes. If you have questions bring them here.

That's a KK backplate. There were two kinds, red and blue. I think the blue did not have the one way valve and the red did, Or vice versa, TD's run best on pressure. I've never seen anyone use the tap on the crankshaft. You probably do need a fine thread needle. Incidentally, the TD 09 runs fine on backplate pressure with the stock needle.

The Galbreath Head is a dropin replacement for the COX glowhead and uses a NELSON glowplug. Henry Nelson is the designer and manufacturer of the NELSON pylon engines. The NELSON plug face is chamfered and seats on the bottom of the plug rather on a compression washer like a standard glowplug. The head and plugs can be purchased from Larry Driskill at [link=http://www.kittingittogether.com]Kitting It Together[/link]. One advantage to the Galbreath/Nelson combination is that the plugs run about $3.25 apiece and are very long lasting. The big advantage is that this is one of the only combinations that will maintain or boost rpm on a COX or NORVEL and use a standard plug. With replacement heads running $9.00 or so, it's a money saver and power booster. The NELSON thread is 11/32 x 32 and will not fit a standard engine.

Andrew, your post jogged my memory that I've been putting off ordering a Galbreath head and some Nelson plugs. Larry's site shows three flavors of plugs. I would guess that for sport flying with 25% nitro the STD would be the one that I want? Anyone care to comment?
Tanks in advance,
Al

AL --

If I remember correctly, I believe Larry posted that the STD plug is being phased out of production in favor of the HD. The HD is supposed to be better for all types of flying and should work well for you. I have both, but can't really tell a difference in performance. They look the same to me except the HD has notches.

The HD plug will last a long time, put a spot of anti seize on it or you might not be able to get it back out 2 years from now .

Thanks for all that information - this has turned into an interesting thread...

I'm not looking for that much power... just something to take up a powered glider with, etc.

Tim, thanks for the offer. I'd need the needle valve, backplate, and the tension spring (for the NVA). If you had them as spare parts, that'd be great, but not for free. I'd like to offer something for them.... it's the least that I could do...

Thanks,

Bob
