Default Avitar Loading

Ok I know this is not the IT department but I seem unable to load an avitar. Here is what I want but every time I try to load it I am told the file is too large? It's as small As I can get.

Help anyone?

Cheers,

Alex

well, the link pic in the post is 150x112, and the full size you uploaded is 320x240
you gotta squeeze the living crud out of it.

Try to get it to 85 across or so, then try an upload to avatar.
try it scaled down to 1/3 of what you have now... then crop if need be
I had to whittle mine lil guy down to 64x64 to fit some other board, but now I can use him as an Icon

If you have the image larger, and maybe a not so compressed jpg, always mess with a copy of the original, dont scale a scale, or jpg a jpg if you dont have to. You lose too much acuracy, the old Copy of Copy problem.

Thanks!

I'm amazed that the forum doesn't automatically reduce the size. Oh well.. we'll give it a shot tomorrow.

Kind of on the same subject, I wonder why RCU has been squeezing me on photo upload size lately? I used to be able to upload a few full sized photos per post, now I'm lucky to send a couple of postage stamp sized shots that aren't worth looking at. It has and will continue to put a damper on my input here.

CP- maybe you hit that netflix Undocumented Throttle
Just a swag, but maybe you put up so many gig, they slap the squeeze on... wonder if you go back to a bunch of your big pics, and whittle them down some, maybe the mythical Total Megs will let you put up.

That, or Pixie Dust... it always seems to be the Pixie Dust.

Whichever, I hope you get it worked out, I like pics.... gets me motivated to cut some wood.

Most likely they're running the limit on their servers or band width. That's it CP, you've done us all in with your million plus posts, lol. jk.

But I don't understand why thy haven't implimented some sort of auto sizing program for downloads. Especially since they automatically limit and re-adjust the forum photo size.

Not getting on the IT guy(s) as I know how hard it is to keep up but jeez you'd think for a free forum they'd order us pizza too...

KE, I never considered anything so diabolical as that! I figure that I should charge for these photos, not jump through hoops to post them.... To be honest, it is more trouble now to contribute here than ever before and I'm not sure why. The only idea I have is that either RCU is tired of seeing my stuff, or they are tightening the belt on bandwidth across the board.

The pixel dimensions probably don't matter as much as the file size. I use Photoshop which has a "Save for Web" feature. I can take an 800x640 pixel image and reduce the file size from 200kbps to 80kbps while retaining the 800x640 pixel size. The quality just goes down a bit, but not enough to matter for the web.

I'm sure there are some free jpg optimizers out there. In fact, here's one:
http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/M...Optimizer.html

Just Google for jpg optimizer

the Win2K MS Photo Editor has SaveAs options for JPG compression level
maybe XP does... or maybe that is another Feature, like removing the Netware connectivity in XP that was avail on win98. Maybe they helped you by removing it. New & improved = does less than old version

ok, done ranting, try MS PhotoEditor, SaveAs, <more>

That explains it. I have been wondering where your "wife's" hand has been in several of your last photo posts.

I'll bet it doesn't change diapers (or do the Canadians call them nappies) !! I'm sure if Andrew could figure that one out it would show up in the next version.

You're welcome SquirlNutZipper.

KidEpoxy,
I can make it pick lottery numbers, but no guarantees on them winning.

We call them diapers here - that would sure be a great thing to have around here right now.

Sorry about not running on Macs, Clint. You could try running an emulator.
