Default Tomboy FF/RC

I built this 36" span Tomboy, a Vic Smeed FF design, from a B&W short kit. I have a PAW .03 in the nose and only throttle and rudder for control. Hasn't flown yet, but I'm encouraged by my recent success with the Gnat, a micro (7" span) bipe witht the same controls.

Hfenn, that's pretty neat! Those controls remind me of the toys that some of these guys have been enjoying. Certainly a nice option to rudder-only!

I have a soft spot fot the Tomboy... sigh. Nice looking model you have there, bet you'll have a ball with it. I will be interested to know how the .03 does with it. They have flown on PeeWee .020's with radio so no doubt it will be just fine.

Hollis,

As everyone in the free world knows, I have a soft spot in my heart for British designs (I have been accused of having a soft spot in my head too, but I still deny it). Vic Smeed, Gordo, Clutton, Malmstrom, and the guy that does all the SP-400 scale stuff whose name escapes me at the moment are some favorites. That's not to say that their American counterparts are any less talented and respected. I guess it's just a case of "more is better". Anyway, congratulations on adapting a good FF design to a fun R/C job. And yes, I'll bet flying your Tomboy IS much like those wonderful/cheap little Aero Aces. Ain't it ALL fun! Woo hoo!

The covering is LW Tissue attached with Balsarite and then I applied one thin coat of Sig LiteKote Butyrate Dope. The covering is a Light Weight polyester covering that I bought at the Balsa Products booth at the Toledo show about 6 years ago. It was (is?) imported from England. I'll check the BP web site later to see if they still carry it.

Yes, Peter Rake was the name I was searching for. Alas, my senior moments seem to be turning into senior hours or sometimes, days. Heavy sigh.

The other candidate is David Boddington who I understand is referred to as Gordo. I don't know why.

Very nice looking plane, hfenn! Try and tell us more about the covering material. Is it anything like Polyspan or Litespan?

Peter Rake really piqued my interest since I've been messing around with some geared 400s myself lately. I found this web site:

Talk about back to the future! Reminds me so much of my first radio model, a Veron Cardinal with a mighty Mills .75 diesel. - John.

There's something rather appealing about keeping things very simple. I guess this is about as pure as it gets. Let us know how the flying goes.

I was thinking last night how mad some people are building thousands of pounds/$ worth of rc jet planes. What is the point of 200mph planes that'll be out of sight in 2 seconds flat?

Keeping the plane, in sight ,for more than, 5 seconds FLAT..LOL There`s a guy in the crash forum, with a smashed 1/2 scale ZERO, worth more than $20,000....A,ZERO???...Now, is that, the models name ,or, the owners,I.Q....To me,(I like Warbirds) a model that big,is like,a,WHITE ELEPHANT..How can you, truly enjoy, something like that??? A person better have,a strong, healthy, heart.[X(] Especially, on a nose first landing!!!..........DAVE

I think that if I had 20K to spend on an airplane I'd want one I could ride in.

I'd rather have a $20k hifi and $2k plane for his budget! At least the stereo won't crash and burn. What a waste :O

Holis,
Nice model BTW, you should get many relaxing sundays from it- provideing you've mastered the 2-3 flick start, Then its just fuel it in the pits , grab the model n radio, walk out flick n fly- no fuss, NO batteries, no starter, just a small diesel can in the hip pocket.
One of my favourite sunday models is a well used/flown 40"Simplex OT with a 1cc diesel, 2ch, no throttle 3mls diesel gives 90 seconds of motor run, best time up is 43 mins

Here you go Rog. Rudder turns it, throttle up to go up, throttle down to come down. Fairly easy but I still find myself pulling back on the elevator stick!
