Aprx. servo size for a DNU and other 1/2 A's??
I want to buid a DNU and a Q - Tee 36" among other plane projects.
I need to get an idea on servo sizes nessasary.
I assume a smaller one for the rudder and throttle would be ok. Maybe nano sized?
I guess a bigger micro for running both ailerons from one servo?
I'm not sure on the elevator but I know I want that one big enough!

RE: Aprx. servo size for a DNU and other 1/2 A's??
Chevy,
I have only used HS-55 from Hitec. I have used them on everything from my fast flying SWR's to my 38" span Sniper with ailerons using only one servo to run both ailerons and never have had a problem. It just doesn't take that big of a servo to get the job done on these smaller planes. If I was to do a dual aileron plane again I maybe would think about the next step up from the HS-55 I think it's the HS-65 or 85 something like that.
Later,
Tim

I too use HS-55s a lot. I order from places like .servocity.com where I can get replacement gear sets for $2.95. That way if the unthinkable happens (like an ash-cray) I can have a 'new' servo in about 3.7 minutes - for cheap. I add one gear set per three servos ordered. Gutten Lucken.

I used the Cirrus 18gram on ailerons & ele, overkill is the safety margin for cheaper servos. I have no idea what they call them these days, but I only use sub 10gram small cheapies on throttle- A Hitec HS55 is just a way better servo and I dont want to risk a plane with a breakable hs55 sized cheapie, so I UpSize to a 14-18gram sized cheapie.
Had planes with (1) cirrus 18gr for ailerons, (1) 18gr for ele, and (1)6.4gr throttle... flew from .074 to .15 size planes... only stripped from crashes, not flight. Dont have data for 049 sized yet

Chevy43 (You can call me Chevy53 - my first car. Hey Tim and Patrick, that was my first "muscle" car too),
Ashcray, arumph-hay aybe-may, aybe-may ot-nay. Wow, it was harder for me to write than it is to say.
But I should have added that I don't think there are many bad choices out there for servos. The Blue Birds and Cirrus are popular and reasonably priced too. For a while I was trying out new servos everytime someone said something good about them. Finally, I decided it just made sense to stick with one brand that had a broad variety and reasonable prices AND available replacement parts. That's how I settled on Hitec's.
I have to admit that I came close to losing my IMAA Taube when I tried for more aileron "holding power" with HS digital servos. But according to people who know a lot more than I do (there are very many of those) it was my fault because I used PPM instead of CPM or PDQ or something like that.
Anyway, here's my expert advise: pick something and stick with it.

chevy43, just to make your choice a bit more complicated, you might also consider the Futaba S3101 or the Hitec HS-81. They have more muscle (over 30in/oz) and still weigh around 16-17 grams. They are both under $20 and both can handle 6v packs.
What I like about these servos is that they are strong enough to use in .15 to .20 size planes, too. I wouldn't fly a two pund .15 powered model with HS-55s - although they are great for 1/2A. You're not adding a whole lot more weight with these, but you end up investing in servos that have a wider range of uses. And I always try to think in terms of what will cost me less in the long run.
edited to add that, Raymond, you left the umlaut off of Lücken.[sm=spinnyeyes.gif]

Chevy,
Like I said I use 1 HS-55 for BOTH ailerons on my Sniper and it is a little bigger than a DNU so don't worry they heve plenty of power no need to add the extra weight if you don't need to.

Yo Rog,
C'mon, you know that I don't drink, snort, or pop. However, my mother used to tell a tale about some child of hers who had been dropped on his head as an infant (perhaps repeatedly). My theory is that this might account for any number of anomalies such as;
1. associating with groups of people who are avoided by 'normal' folks,
2. liking the smell of hot castor oil in the morning,
3. and running around one's workshop with arms outspred making engine sounds and executing pylon turns and other aerobatic maneuvers (loops are the hardest).
Geez, that poor guy could really use some sympathy I'll bet.

Patrick,
I'm surprised that you think I would be silly enough to try an Immelman! I mean, even someone as agile and lithe as I would find that a challenge. Whereas you have obviously mastered the maneuver. I'm impressed.
.... have you tried using a little "English" when tossing your child? The last time my Arizona daughter visited I tried a little "draw" on my four-year-old grandson with mixed result. I think his flapping and screaming threw me off.
But I gotta tell you this quick: I took him out in a rented boat for some fishing (he caught the dummest fish in the lake. He had to "go" and there wasn't time to get to shore so I said it was OK to go over the side. He got all set then said, "do you think the fish will mind?" Aren't children wonderful?
