RE: Sure Start Bashing
I did the same thing to a 290 some years back for a contest free flight engine. Didn't get a chance to test it each way but it sure LOOKS strong...
It would be easy enough to test this one. Just need a stock backplate and a tach.

RE: Sure Start Bashing
Skaliwag, If you were able to maintain a smooth, continuous run, all the way to the reed, then I would just hang onto it until you get a better matched piston and liner. If the passageway isn't clean, then the idea would never work, it would be too turbulent. I can think of no reason why this idea would not work with the right combination of parts. I'm not "deep" enough with COX parts to do much with it. Thanks for the offer, though!

skaliwag:
I got four Sure Starts and all four of them do 18,500 RPM with a Galbreath head and Nelson glow plug. They had no taper to the cylinders and were running 6-2 APC props on 35% nitro. Last week I lost a Reed Valve at 20+k. It broke the crank journal after many free flight runs. I was kind of proud of it.
