Ace kitted the Pacer. I built one a number of years ago. It came in at the specified weight which was about 22 oz using the "old" ACE foam wing. At that weight, it was a little heavy by today's standards. I had a TD on it and it flew great as long as the TD was at RPM. It flew and tracked really well. Cubans and other basic aileron and elevator aerobatics were not a problem.

I understand that Thundetiger has the old foam wings available. I would like to have built one with at Norvel 061, but I waiting on whether additional glow plugs are going to be available. I built the "Simple Simon" from Model Builder years back with the ace tapered foam wing with a TD 051. No throttle control, boy was it fast. If I can't order the thunder tiger foam wing, I might build Gene's version. Thunder tiger uses amazon.com shipping network , but it says it can't ship to Canada. I've had no problem buying books through amazon.com. Go figure.

Awesome little airplane. I added rudder to mine and it did great snaps and spins, all with the TD screaming.

I flew that thing until the balsa virtually melted from oil soaking. After it finally came apart you could squeeze the oil out of the wood.

I probably had more fun with that plane than just about anything I've ever flown.

Ok, you Pacer vets. I have a brand new TD .09. This thread has got me to thinkin' about those classic TD designs like the Pacer, Mach None and GLH. Anyway, if you were going to scale the Pacer up for a TD .09 what span would be ideal? It's 42" so I'm think 46 1/4" maybe? That's 110%. 115% would be about 48 1/4". I know there are some here that would put an .09 in the original, but that would be a bit too ballistic for me.

If I may IMHO, I have been researching for a classic pattern plane. I have read that because it's built like a tank to begin with it becomes reliant on weight and is why the design is very specific about nothing more than a .049 TD. Apparently you only have to knock off a couple of ounces to make it pretty hot.

However, regardless of what happens to the .049 Pacer I have in the making I am definetly going to build theSuper Pacer, I have a new .25 itching to be put in something.

1/2A:

I built the Super Pacer also - about one year ago. It flys great and tracks well also. I am using an OS .25FX and it provides plenty of power sufficient for knife edges, etc. If you like the 1/2A version, then you are going to love the .25 size.

Here is the link to the Super Pacer plans, also a Gene Rock multi-page PDF file.
It is a really good flyer, a .25 is plenty of power.

Dave, is the cad version of that Super Pacer plan available anywhere? I have no trouble with the pdf, but it's much easier to scale drawings when they're in one piece. I have an OS FS .40 Surpass that would be nice in a slightly larger Super Pacer, say, 52'' or so.

Guys, I posted in the vintqage forum on a hobby shop in Suffolk, VA called Eagle Hobby. Tom Atkins is the owner. He has a Super Pacer kit NIB along with quite a few more older kits at the older prices. He also have several Ace foam wing kits in stock. Give him a call. www.eaglehobbyshop.com. Tell him I sent you!

RAINEDAV,
I may have a single sheet pdf, but not a cad file per se.
It may be a vector format pdf however.
PDF files are easy to print at other scales, just specify what
you want when you print it. I printed Genes letter size tiled Papillon plan
enlarged onto 11x17 to see how it would look as a .15 size plane.
You may want to try some of Dick Sarpolis Hammer designs as well
(most published by FM) they are easy to build and fly great from what I hear.

By my reckoning it is already .09 sized as it is! 22oz with an .049 may have been a decent figure back a while, but nowadays with the equipment we have available there is no excuse for a 22oz 1/2A aircraft.

I doubt you will find it much faster with the .09, but it will have a fair bit more authority from hand launch and in climb/vertical lines. You can always run an 8-3 prop and tame down the top speed too.

Yeah, I know you predicted people would say this, but I had to anyway! It's a real nice, functional sport aerobatic design, I would encourage you to build one.

Silly me, I thought APC made an 8-3 but they don't, just a 7-3. Anyhow, I still don't think it would be much faster.

RAINEDAV --

Check out Andrew Donatelli's (AKA: Bipe Flyer) [link=http://www.blackflight.com/]TilePrint program[/link] -- there is also has a link at the bottom of Dave Fritzke's page. It will allow you to resize PDF files to whatever scale you desire.

[link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_1369249/mpage_1/key_tileprint/tm.htm]Here is a link[/link] to the thread in this forum discussing Tile Print.

Thanks, all. Photoshop CS opens pdf files (it's Adobe bloatware, too) so I can enlarge each page and print no problem. I just thought I'd ask about the cad file since I would be able to redraw stuff to standard wood dimensions.Sometimes when you enlarge stuff by increments other than 25% or 33% you get goofy sizes. But, that's no problem. It's easy enough to round things off to the nearest basla sizes like .61 to 5/8, etc.

You could make a plywood skid that extends below the muffler like the one on the plans, just bigger. But, if you're landing on grass and flair it a bit at touch down I don't think you'll hurt the engine.

That's a nice looking plane.
