Default Hey Crew?

Did we cast in stone what the limit actually was for the unlimited race? I know I said up to .15 could play in the games (not much of that happened) but I dont recall if we decide the top end would be .061 or .074 since so many of us have one or more of each....Oh and once again? if your turning left and going fast which side of the wing (from the top view) do you put the single aileron on?..Rog

The right wing. The idea is that it creates a bit of adverse yaw to the right and keeps the nose from tucking in. Picture a plan flying knife edge, starboard side up, and yawing to the right (up).

Rog,

Let's limit it to .074. Taking it to .15's opens a whole new can of worms. I'll get off my butt and make up those plans for you today.

Later,
Tim

Don't forget guys a Norvel .074 is no high revver. I would think a .049/.061 would spank it any day.

Nope, it's got a rear exhaust 3.5cc (.21) K&B. Turns a 7x8 APC prop at around 19K.

Exactly which .049/.061 should one be looking for?

But, which one? Or should I just build something and slap a surestart on the front?

Rog,

If I remember accurately, you were the one who started the .074 limit (which I agree with because it allows yet another Norvel in the crew sorry Bob). But seriously, I had planned to campaign my Blitz which had an .061 for power. I had considered switching to my .074 but I didn't think the extra weight would pay off in extra MPHs.

Vic,

If I can find a way to do it, YES! Don't know if I'll be able to save enough vacation time or cash for next year or not - not a cheap trip, and it'll take maybe 6 or 7 days round trip.

Hmmmm - Fora .049 instead of a Norvel - that just may be the ticket......I'll have to let my 2 brain cells work on that one for a while......

.074 sounds good to me for the upper limit for unlimited. Otherwise, I'll have to put
my Nelson .15 on my 1/2A Shrike, and I shudder to think how much lead would have
to go in the tail for balance...

As an aside, at the 1/2A race / fun-fly, someone said the AP .061's were pretty good,
and a real alternative to the hard-to-come-by Norvel .061's. I am curious if anyone
here has tached an AP, a Big Mig and AME .061 on the same prop(s) (same day, same
fuel) and can quantify this? (Yes, I know FORA, CS, Shuriken, etc. will outrun them, but
let's compare sub-$100 1/2A's).

I recall asking about it yes, but I thought it wasnt that popular of an idea ...so I backed off, but yeah it will add to the list of available (well. if you have one) engines....Rog

Mine needed no lead and it has a K&B .21. The secret is to shorten the nose by about 1/2 inch during construction and then to make sure the battery is as far back as possible.

Chuck,
Did you have the K&B on the .10 size or the 1/2 A ? I raced in a club w/ a group of flyers that used the 1/2A Shrike and Big Mig RC .061's and they can be very fast w/ the tight pylon spacing used at most 1/2A races. I think we clocked them at somewhere between 75 and 80 mph. They seemed very quick and are great fun. I think they would out speed the .074 any day and I have many of both engines. Try to find a AME .061 and lose all the weight that you can. One of the guys got down to 8 or 9 oz on his Shrike- it was very quick. Of course the Fora will always be the quicker w/ more cash outlay.

Chuck,
I also raced a guy that had a .10 size Shrike w/ a OS max .15 against my 1/2A .061 and he could not stay w/ me. It's not your K&B .21, but the smaller plane w/ lite weight can keep up.

Chuck,
I believe Shu is right, that must be the .10 sized Shrike you have your K&B .21
on, the 1/2A is really too little airplane for that powerplant. I've also got a Shrike
.10 kit started, it is getting an MVVS .21 with tuned muffler. My 1/2A Shrike has the
Norvel AME .061 on it, seems to do best (speed and pulling power) with an APC
5.7x3. I would also estimate 75-80 on a good day, which it wasn't really having at
the race in Snow Camp. Probably my fuel is getting old, or time for a new plug,
usually the motor does a noticeably better. I haven't actually weighed 1/2A Shrike,
but I estimate 12-13 oz.
Mike
