Ace foam wing info
The Ace foam wings were used by many and there were quite a few plans published in more than one publication.
In my mind they were cheap and versitile. I made up several designs of my own using these wings. Even designed built covered installed the radio in one night and flew it the next day! Flew great but folded the wing on the third flight!
However the cores were in my opinion heavy and sometimes one had to balance the plane laterally because of inconsistant foam densities. Does anyone know the average lbs/CuFt ?
I have heard that the ones available from Thunder Tiger are lighter. True or false? they are still Ace, so how could they be different?
Well, I do know they weights varied and I was wondering if anyone has any info on the differen't weights per pair or better yet by panel.
Also can no longer find them on Quantum Models. Must one have a part number to find them there as with Thunder Tiger? It would seem that Ace should still sell them.
Any interesting facts on these wings?

RE: Ace foam wing info
Robert,
Old ones, retail boxed:
Tapered- 52-55g (~1.9oz) /pr. I have 2 old pairs in boxes.
Straight- 79g (~2.8 oz)/pr. I just have the one pair of straight ones.
HOWEVER, the 2 pairs of TAPERED wings in my AllStar kit weigh
76-79g per pair. So they did vary a lot.
Dave
The individual tapered panels weighed from 26 to 40 grams each.
These are ALL older ACE product.

That is what I was trying to understand. It is a good wing that saves work and is not expensive. However it occourred to me that there were some good ones and some not so good ones.
I know I bought several pair where the mold lines were not very close. I used thenm anyway, It never occurred to me that I could possibly get some better ones had I notified Ace about how shoddy these were. I Know I was happy to have had them at all.
I wonder just how wide a range the wights may have varied. Still I cannot see myself going through a stack of them with a scale as I would today with a stack of balsa in a store.

RE: Ace foam wing info
I order four sets from ehobbies.com a while back. Yep, they weighed in right at half as much as the old ones. It's a different foam and molding process, but the final result is the same as the original. Just a whole lot lighter!

Is that right? That sounds like music to my ears! Do you have some numbers to back that up? Not that I don't believe you. If they are so light it sounds like a perfect combo for the DNU for the newbies. A little less work on their part with a nice end product.
And these are still Ace but distributed by ehobbies?
Still the older ones worked well enough for the most part. What I have on my mind is something lighter that would be more suitable to electric applications. Heck lighter is suitable all the way around!

RE: Ace foam wing info
BL, my first DNU used one. I cut four inches off each to bring the span down to size and used Black Baron (really crappy stuff) to cover it. Complete and ready to use it weighed in at four ounces. I had borrowed an older set from Wilson to make drawings and they weighed 4oz right out the box. Also the older ones were tapered the last inch, but the new ones were completely uniform. The only difference I could find in the boxes was that the new ones had a gold TT sticker.

Another source of Ace Foam wings:
http://www.thundertiger4u.com/consta...g-p-12687.html
and
http://www.thundertiger4u.com/tapere...g-p-12688.html
$8.80/pr.
They also sell Thunder Tiger .07's for $41 ea if you buy 10 of em!
Otherwise, $54 ea.!
I ordered 2 TT07 carbs (under $8 ea) to see if they will work in any way
on a TeeDee. I'll let ya'all know.

RE: Ace foam wing info
The weight issue is why I cut my own ACE wing copies that are less than half the weight. I used to sell them, but I can't compete on price.
So, if you're worried about weight then you could build a foam cutter and cut your own. It only takes a few hours to build a gravity fed cutter.

What part number is the TT07 carb? Have they changed the TT07? The carb on the one I have is part of the crankcase.
Edit:
Wow, my new camera sure shows the dirt!
