RE: New shuttle design?
I don't see a way to RC it without a lot of work, but here's a thought.
Add some stubby little propeller blades to the body that will then act as a counter rotating propeller. Also, add some 2" pieces of fuel tubing to the tank fillers and baling wire them up against the side of the crankcase so all the fuel doesn't immediately spin out. Launch it like a football (spinning it the right way of course). In effect, it would be a coaxial helicopter along the lines of the 1960's rubber powered Jim Walker "Skywalker".
Let us know how it turns out!
(There IS a chance it might actually fly...)

Dudes...don't knock it till you've tried it. I lost them a couple 3 years ago but I used to have plans for a RC plane that used a widemouth 1 litter sode bottle for a fuse. The nylon engine mount( cant remember the brand) for a Norvel screwed to the cap and was a perfect fit. Used a built up or foam wing. The guy used to sell the plans on eBay.

Heh pt . I cut the cap threads off that type bottle then filed it smooth with a rasp. Older style bottles had a larger lip so the motor mouted right to it 3 screws. Todays style top is too small in dia. i believe. Might be able to cut out a circular piece of lite ply the same size as the tank and it should be jut fine for the fire wall. I found that in order to fly any thing close to straight up it needed weight in the tale/ bottom so i added water he he, fast and dirty. what made me laugh so hard was the maiden flight where it shot up and headed for a post oak tree and proceeded to claw it's way almost to the top of the tree before getting hung in the branches, motor just screamin' hellllllp!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tree has clearly lit a spark under several of the more creative "regulars" (I use the term very loosely) of this forum. I am confident that come Spring the air around Burlington, NC will be cluttered with airborne soda jugs - biplane, deltas, SWR's, and who knows what else (maybe Tim's helmet - hovering?)
Hmmm, a 24-inch delta with a Norvel .074 up front. Twin fins. Elevons. Could happen. Would youse-all accept a bottle cut in half? How about something smaller than two liters? I think I'll keep my eyes peeled for a "special" fuselage/bottle.

I double-dog-dare you to stick a wing through it and fly it on elevon controls!

Don't you know that it's a serious breach of playground etiquette to jump directly to a double-dog-dare without having made a dare and double-dare first?
Hey, if this spaceship can fly the why not a 2L pop bottle?

Whenefer I heer the wurd "empty" I think of my fren Vic (hic). Shhh. Was that a Martian Space Ship I herd. Speekin of "juices", I gotts go potty - kwik. . . .
. . . . Ah, that's better.
Keeping in the true vein of the original post (I think) - I made some sketches for a bottle-delta last night. The bottle cut in half (top to open bottom) and screwed to the flat-plate wing's center section via four "L" tabs. I'd pinch, or squeeze, the rear tabs to provide a little tension to the bottle and maybe stiffen it a little so that when I screwed the twin (fixed) fins to the bottle i'd be a little less floppy. All radio bits, and the .074, would be mounted to the wing's solid 1/4-inch thick center section (ala Blitz) - making the bottle "just for pretty" as the Pennsylvania Dutch would say. My thought was that if I used a clear bottle I could finish the inside with floral spray to match whatever scheme I used for the laminating film covering - maybe making most of the big ole bottle like the canopy - or maybe put in a lotta windows for a commercial jet. Finally, if I could get the thing to fly at all, I could add the bottom half of the bottle - permanently attached with Goop 9instead of screw tabs because of the need to absorb landing forces.
Now all I need is the time to finish the forty-eleven other projects I have to get to first.
Thanks for listening, and remember to vote for the "best person" on the 7th (hysterical laughter, knee slap, knee slap, oh I gotta go again - sometimes I crack myself up).

RE: New shuttle design?
Hey youse-all, ya mean there's another old guy just south of Raleigh that might need help from me because he gets confused and forgets . . . what was the subject again - Oh, bottles with Gee Bee's in 'em. Whew. Dale, I gotta admit that I must be hanging around with Vicman too much cuz you had me goin' for a minute with the red and white thing. And three litres is how many quarts?
