My Shrike Progress
Ok, I finally got the engine mounted and the front rounded(I hate sanding) so I cheated a little and used my dremel...I'm ready for the wind tunnel now and then a little more fine sanding to achieve maximum speed! In the interest of minimizing drag during the maiden I think I am going to shave my legs......ok that's a little extreme....maybe just a swimmer's cap!

Nice work, Sarge! I didn't realize how much bodywork went into a 1/2A Shrike. Shaping balsa isn't something to be hated if you're set up with tools to make short work of it. The problem is that carving and planing are really the right ways to knock 90% of the wood down, but it seems that alot of guys who dread shaping wood do so because they think that 100% of the shaping process is done with sandpaper. Sanding seems like a safer way to go, but it is the slow boat to China.

RE: My Shrike Progress
Usually when I read about "fog" it has something to do with my mental capacity. This context is a happy change.
The only thing I can contribute about flying in fog is back when I used to fly gliders. There were early mornig foggy times when you'd launch and the model would disappear at the top of the line. Then when it landed (quickly because there would be zero lift in those conditions) the model would be dripping wet from the vapor condensing on all the surfaces.

RE: My Shrike Progress
Does anyone know which aileron strip set to use with the 1/2a shrike. The plans say Carl Goldberg #402 which I ordered but when it came in the other day the hardware was way too big for the plane[]...if anyone has built this plane do you remember what you used for the aileron strip set??
thanks

Hi Bill,
It's been fun watching your progress on this one. My suggestion would be to just bend your own A-links, it's just two 90 deg. bends in a rod threaded at one end. You could take your plan to the local LHS and see if the have a prebent set that will work. If not they should have the rod, clevisis, and links to make your own. You can bush the rods with brass, aluminum or plastic tubing if you want to. A method I've tried and really like is to use an unbushed link. Put some vaseline on the rod then glue on your 1/4" trailing edge stock with epoxy. As the epoxy cures wiggle the link a bit every few minuets to keep the rod free. Once the epoxy cures you have a nice slop free epoxy bushing.

RE: My Shrike Progress
Is that the .10 size shrike? If so, I have a few comments about mine (stories too). I also custom bent my own rods with one end threaded. I used plastic pushrod sleeves as bushings.

Dang it! I've got most of a new fuse put together today and just have the wings and tail to cut from the plans.
This is an insanity you know. lol.
How does an unsold 4200kv inrunner sound?
