What's your dream plane for the Norvel .074? What plane have you always wanted to bolt this engine to, assuming you like the engine.

I'm in that "brainstorming" process where I've got a few ideas percolating.

I know at least one person who posts here knows what this is. I'm thinking around 37" to 38" span.

Bushmaster, Bushhog, Bush-for-pres, . . . Isn't it a pattern plane?

I was hoping to find an .074 this weekend but all they had was three Big Mig .061s at King R/C. I wanted an .074 to put in a 1/2A Dominator. The one I have is destined for a delta.

Looks like a UE-.001 to me.

What is this the first entry into the 2007 design contest?

I have one of these kits sitting there taunting me to put an .074 in the nose.

I'm just not quite game, yet.

"Brushfire"! But altered a little toward stubby and cute with a simplified wing, right? To me, the prettiest pattern plane ever. Published in Model Builder back in the 80s.

GREAT idea! And good taste.

Raymond was close. He had four of the first five letters right. But, you got it, Jim.

Everything above the line on the fuse would be carved foam, including the fin. The bottom part is a simple, rectangular balsa box. Inspiration for that type of construction came from the great Bipe Flyer.

Ray,
The 1/2 A Dominator is a speed racer type plane- I think the .061 is the right engine for this plane- not the .074.
The .074 is more suited to a sport plane. It would work in the plane, but if you keep it light ( easy to do in this plane ) the .061 is the better engine. Try it you will like it

Rain, I know you like to build, but the simple series are good for an .074,,I have one ready to go in my Sig Hummer and one maybe for a fully sheeted Rivets and another that may go in a simple series Cub, although I do have the GP-07 that is recommended for that one, course I cant whip out a plane during lunch like CP, I need a good month unless its an ARF then I can do it in 2 weeks.....Rog

Kits are something I hadn't even thought about (I'm stuck in the plans mindset). The Simple Series and the Herr stuff are worth looking at. Here's a scale subject that seems too big for 1/2A and probably better suited to the .074.

David --

Very interesting plane -- what is the dihedral? It's too small for me to read and too pixelated when I blow it up.

Andrew, it's 1" under each tip. I purposely post totally useless 800 pixel thumbnails of plans since they're almost always copyrighted.

At some point in time all the magazines went from openly encouraging people to scale up the plans reproduced on their pages, to discouraging the practice. Maybe it was the advent of PCs and scanners that shifted things.

Kits?

I did a Norvie 074 Twin Bash on a HOB 2x6 Glider
Way to much for the flat bottom wing, but replace the ribs with a semi or full foil and it would be good to go. Had a Flutter problem with the elevator above 2/3 throttle, but probably my cheap hardware.... oh, btw, it flys nice with a flameout & only half the elevator working if you back off the thottle some

The smaller one has a .061 and the bigger one a .074.

This looks good.

I like the swept wing and tail combo. Have no Norvel engines so would use a TD. Can you draw in a 2 oz Sullivan flex tank on its' side and see if it fits? The slope front ones are what I use. Need the 2 oz with a TD to get decent flight times. I mount all my engines sideways so it looks like an easy fit. I would build Aileron, Elevator, Rudder because with that side area and the side area carried wll forward should knife edge.

I am attracted to the 1/2 a versions of older 60-90 size pattern planes. What about some of the Ivan Kristen, or Don Lowe designs?

What about small retracts?? I would probably fly with no gear.

329e, what are those?! They're really cool looking; sort of like '90s Fun-Fly models.

Half-wits. You can download the plans for free at www.geocities.com/matchlessaero/halfwit.html.

RD, I think it takes a .074 to fly a PACER or MACH NONE the way they should be able to fly, more like a .60 sized pattern plane. The .074 is ideally suited to bail out those underpowered and overweight designs and deliver them from HO-HUM-NESS. There is enough power to give them 18-20 ounce pigs a gravity defying vertical line and a nice throttle.

HOB Spacewalker, nice flying plane, good performance with the .074 and 17.5% nitro fuel - 25% didn't increase the RPMs any. I put 1/2A floats on mine, but pranged it yesterday when I too off teh grass on a test flight with teh ailerons reversed - don't know how I did that, but it's need 6 months since I flew it last and was going to the lake tomorrow It's repairable, tho a winer project.

Engine is back in my acer, plans built for some fun flying instead.

cp, I'm with you on the Pacer and Mach None. Good choices!

BTW, I'm still trying to find out what kind of numbers people are getting with a 7x3 on the .074. I didn't have an APC 7x3 so I tried a 7x4 today and it really bogged it down. Not a good prop for this engine (around 13,750). I'm hoping to break 17,000 with an APC 7x3. Is that feasible?

RD - Once you've run a couple of quarts through the .074 you'll be able to turn 17k with the 7x3. It's a great little engine!

Anyone have first-hand experience with the HOB Spacewalker?

I built one a few years back. It came out a bit heavy I thought, things like dowel LE, and sheet fuselage. I flew mine with a Thunder Tiger .15 which was plenty of power.
