A-S Deisel, need a little help.
I have a A-S Deisel, made in England, ser. # 547 hand marked on the bottom. It appears to be about .049 size. I need a new connecting rod and have not been able to find out much about it or the manufacture. Anybody know anything about this engine, the manufature or where I might be able to get a new conrod? The contra piston also seems lose, any place to get it serviced?

Looks like a DC Merlin clone, or just marketed under a dif brand, so i would think a merlin rod and other parts should fit, there is a guy that often has merlin rods for sale on ebay.

If the contra piston is too loose and causeing problems, it can be fixed by, carefully removeing it out the bottom of the cylinder-(do mark the possition of the cylinder in the crankcase befor dissassembly), then place the contra piston bottom onto a flat smooth peice of steel, then gently tapping on the top useing a brass drift/peice of hard wood as you dont want to swell the top side of the contra, keep checking the fit and repeating tapping till the contra fits firm in the top of the cylinder- note allways remove replace the contra from the bottom of the cylinder.

Everyone,
It's not even 2 hrs later and I already have 5 responses, Thanks all. After disassembly, the displacement is even smaller than I thought, the piston only measures 0.350 in diameter ( .030 ci ? ). Can't measure the conrod, only have the top half. The contra piston itself is tight in the cylinder, the tommy bar adjuster is lose (wiggles in the threaded part of the head). I don't think this thing will ever run again, but combatpigg and skaliwag thanks for the contact suggestions, I will try to contact one or both of them. SGC thanks for the disassembly instructions. I think the best place for this little engine is on display in a clear cube as a conservation piece. Again, thanks to every one.

skylarkmk1,
If your motor is around 1/2cc then its equivalent to the DC Dart , the chap skalywag named is the chap i was thinking of and should also be able to supply a Dart conrod, he also makes replacement needle valve assy's and compression screws for all the DC motors.

Just found my Merlin instruction sheet, the Merlin has a bore of .375"

Skylark,
The engine is an Allbon-Saunders AS-55
It dates from around 1960 and is quite rare today, not nearly as common as the DC series of diesels, which was also designed by Allbon.
It is the same size as the DC (Allbon) Dart; 0.55 cc = .034 cu.in.
I don´t know if the con rods are identical.
If you don´t get help from any of the sources suggested already, I can recommend a guy in England - Mike Crisp, who can help you restore the engine for a very reasonable cost.
He has helped me restore, or manufactured spares for, a number of diesels, including some very obscure ones. Mike still lives in the pre-IT era so you´ll need to send a regular letter.
Send a PM if interested & I´ll look up the address for you

Hello again Skylark,
Here´s a photo of my A-S .55
It came with a simple turned alu tank that shouldn´t be to hard to duplicate.
Judging by the photos you downloaded, your engine looks to be excellent shape, apart from the broken rod and loose contra-piston. Would be well worth to spend a few dollars to restore it

Skylark
I too have an A-S 55 with a broken conrod ser. # 544. I do have both pieces of the conrod though. I made a new conrod from 6061 aluminum bar stock. The new conrod is not as pretty as the stock one but the engines runs now. It has been several years ago since I made that little conrod so I do not remember the dimensions. I might be able to do a sketch of the conrod and send that to you if that will help. My workshop is in the snow at the moment and too cold to go out there. A search on Google for Allbon-Saunders was interesting: http://www.antiquemodeler.org/sam_ne...ves_larkin.pdf

The tank on the A-S 55 looks like it made from spun aluminum and not machined from bar stock. You should be able to find some modeler over there in England that has a metal lathe that can make you one from bar stock that looks the same. I never used that type of tank on those engines because they leaked badly.
