The cast case is supposed to be a better case, it provides a better crank bearing surface , Cox dropped it due to the difficulty they encounted cutting the threads , in all other aspects it was a better case, it was cheaper to produce than the bar stock case, lighter, tougher.

I love Martin's site but the info about that engine is complete crap. Those cast cases were never made during the same time frame that the Sure Start choke tube backplate was made. Purely a case of some moron at Estes that had no idea what they were doing putting together parts from a bin and didn't care what they made. If you note at the bottom of the text is says the engine was donated by Estes Corp!...nuff said! What are we going to see next from left over Venom crankcases stuffed to the front of Sure Start backplates.

Tim

So it's an RC Bee crankcase with a sure start back plate. Does the zinc alloy sound right to you Tim?

The Venom will be marketed as the Red Case Sure Start.

Bipe,

Thats sound right as the metal backplates are a zinc casting that are plated with brass. I bet it's the same alloy.

I just ordered six through the cox site before reading the post above about the cast crankcases. Now I'm very curious as to what will be delivered by the brown clown.
Just got two NIP surestarts today from a guy selling them on *bay. They were exactly like those pictured on the cox site. I was counting on these six to be the same as those pictured...........oh well, we'll see.
I just got my order Saturday in the mail, with 6 SureStarts, but I'll have to look tonight when I get home to see what the cases are. At least I got them. I was more interested in the other stuff to look at the engines, they're just for fooling with.

I'm hoping they ran out of surestarts and send me those six venoms that they found lying in the bottom of a box

I received a email today that they have my order.

I can't imagine using ZINC for any engine crankcase. Zinc is what I use on my 9.9 outboard engine as a sacrificial anode. It works well for that purpose.

Some alloys of Zinc are BETTER for bushings than bronze.

I also bought some SureStarts a couple weeks of ago, and got the ones pictured below.Since i am very new to this stuff, i am not in a position to comment on their quality.
Bipe, as you live close to me, i can mail you one, and after running it, you post your findings here.Shouldn't take more than a couple days for you to get it.

Sure, give me all the work. Just kidding.

Better yet, why don't you come out to the field sometime and we can do some flying and set up your engine? If it ever stops raining, that is.[sm=drowning.gif]

School semester is winding down, so not quite possible in the next few weeks. But in next couple of months for sure. The rain should be over by then, too. Also, i am a little short of some flying equipment that i will be buying in the next little while.
Based on your recomendation and positive reviews, i managed to hunt down a couple norvel engines too. They sure are darn hard to find. Abundant on ebay though.

Anyways, if you would like to test it, pm me your address.

Go to http://www.missionwings.com and you can find a map to the club field on the events page. There's an email link on the front page for the club president (that's me). Just let me know any time you'd like to visit.

I emailed Larry Renger about these cast zinc crankcases and here is what he said...

"Yes I was there, they are Zamac, some sort of Zinc alloy. They were heavy, porous and wore out easily."

Not what people wanted to hear I'm sure....I think it's bullcrap that Estes would even use them!!!!

That's the crap they make the cheap die-cast cars out of. It's even used as a replacement for lead wheel weights for balancing auto wheels![:'(]

Wow, if that the case, I'm glad I only ordered six of em' What a shame that the last remaining cox engines would be such junk.

Clean, I hate to tell you this, but they went in the dumpster. Literally. Say goodbye to Cox engines. For our purposes, they are gone.

Having worked there I do not find it surprising at all. Sucks, yes, but no surprise.

Considering these may be the bottom of the barrel they may be worth hanging on to. Look at what people are paying for junk on e-bay and in another 5 years there is no telling what these may bring. They are still probably worth the money just as a parts engine - cylinder/piston-rod, and glow plug.

Clean,

I dare you to find an engine that gives more bang for the buck....in this case $7.00.

I'd rather have a Mangusta DR.

As were the 6 I got last week. Beats me why this is, but I imagine it is much like reaching into the pickle barrel and taking what you get.
