I got the funny ones too.
It seems that the backplate gasket is designed to permit leaking along the screws.
Here are the differences.

Supagloo, so your conclusion is that the aluminium ones are better than the zinc alloy ones, which you received?

RE: no more surestarts?
Here's why they made those. The zinc alloy they used melts around 700 °F. This means they could probably use the same cold chamber machines they used for plastic. Aluminum needs 1220 °F to melt and requires far more expensive hot chamber die cast machines. I would guess that it was an attempt to save money over the machining steps required for the extruded cases.

I can picture what happened...
"Lets see if we can save a few bucks by casting the crankcases ."
"Hmm, aluminum will wear out the moulds to fast so lets try Zinc."
"Well, those turned out like crap. We better just stick to the machined aluminum crankcases."
20 years later...
"Hey, I found some crankcases in a box marked 'JUNK', but the sure start parts fit - let's sell 'em. What can people expect for 7 bucks?"

It's about getting time to fit bronze bushes into the old worn our machined crankcases.................there's enough aluminium to make it work.

That's the great thing about people switching over to electrics. They'll be selling they're 1/2A engines. I'm sure that there are plenty out there for the few of us who still want to use them.

RE: no more surestarts?
I emailed cox and asked them if they are ever going to make more 1/2A engines. They said they will in the future if the demand is great enough.
So maybe we can get more engines if we bug the crap out of cox??

RE: no more surestarts?
Question: Back in Post 53, the first [left side] photo, shows a 'red thing' which fits over the ?intake? and has two little tabs to hold the reed. Some years ago I could buy a "Rebuild Kit' which included these 'red' pieces, [but at that time the pieces were brown] and I tried to get the 'holder' to hold the reed, but the holder never fit over the backplate part, and I could never use the brown reed holder. What am I doing wrong? Or, are these engines only sold in the Netherlands? Of all the engines I have picked up at Swaps, and from friends, I have never seen one with the brown plastic reed holder. Is it only for a special 'product engine'?

Yuu,
Might you have put the gasket in the wrong place? It should go next to the metal crankcase.
Re: the cast crankcase. I do not have one of these but if I remember correctly, aluminum crank cases were used in a production model. They looked like the zinc ones except the zinc was darker.
George
Edit: Another thought...might your engine have been one made before the plastic was used? Previously, the reed was retained with a spring clip. Some rebuild kits had parts for both.

RE: no more surestarts?
George..thanks for the reply...but I think I had it right...the two little 'prongs' on the plastic part holds the reed in place... so the brown plastic piece has to slide over the backplate cylinderical piece so the 'prongs' can hold the red against the venturi...and the little raised ring that the reed seals against. BUT the inside diameter of the brown piece is too small to allow it to slide over the backplate...at least on the .049 plastic backplates I have. So....[I'm thinking....]...aluminum fuel tank and little rubber gasket to backplate....screws thru backplate thru tank....thru little holes in the brown plastic piece...oops! put reed in first...then brown plastic piece...[bpp] but bpp doesn't fit over the aluminum reed holder...Nope, still stuck. HEY !! Is that bpp part for the little Pee Wee? Is it an .020 Rebuild Kit?? I must have five of them bpp in my spare parts kit. I wish someone would list the Cox repair parts numbering system so we could see what the numbers are. I have an .020 but I'm missing the Prop Drive Plate, and I can still buy 3-48 prop screws at the hardware store, .....but I could check the bpp against the .020 intake....

RE: no more surestarts?
Well, I've found the little red and white 'Cox' bags with the rebuild kit. Cox part number 1300...and it says .049 on the factory bag. There is also the little black 'ring' gasket that goes between the air intake venturi and the back plate. That's why I bought the rebuild kits. Thanks to you guys I now know I can make the little gasket myself. That got two more engines running. Today I'll go back to the dungeon and try to figure out how those retainers fit.....shucks, I even made one of those wire ring retainers from music wire to hold the reed in place. Another engine running! Maybe I won't need that little brown plastic piece.

To get back to the topic:
The Surestarts are OUT OF STOCK again. They finally run out of parts to make a complete engine I guess. Or............

RE: no more surestarts?
George..I have re-read your post #67...several times, and finally woke up. You wrote...."the cast crankcase " I've been trying the plastic back plate, and the aluminum fuel tank cases. No wonder they don't fit. But I know I have a cast case engine somewhere...like the cast cases showing up on the SS engines now...sometimes! If I can find that cast case engine, I'll try the brown plastic part. Thanks, George. Now, "back to the topic"...

RE: no more surestarts?
Found this interesting auction while cruising *bay. Is it just me, or is this guy trying to present these surestarts as something special?

After looking around some more it seems this is not the only guy doing this. I have six of these "jewels", if I could get $20 ea. I would be happy
WoooHooo "Limited production" Maybe if I CA'd some rhinestones to them i could get $25
