Hallelujah Brian! Looks great. It's twelve days until the 27th. You've got plenty of time. Think it can be ready to test fly this weekend? or, at least test run the TD.

Thanks to this thread I ordered a Skydrill and DNU from Select Hobbies last week.
Came yesterday witht he mail.
Very impressively wrapped in Tyvek type wrapping.
But...
I'm afraid to open the package!
[sm=frown.gif]
If I do I'm scared I won't be able to help myself and I'd have to drop everything and start building one of them!!!!

Steve - I haven't had a chance to weigh the airframe yet. The rudder / elevator was just posed for the picture (you know how it is, always scotch tape together before closing shop). I will weigh tonight when I get a chance.

Hoping to get the wing done by this weekend so I can start covering.

RD - I am up for testing the TD this weekend if you are. I believe I have everything needed with exception of fuel. Actually, I would like to test 2-3 TD's to see how they run... it has been awhile.

If you let me borrow one of your TD's for my Sure Shark, you can use my fuel... I guess.

Actually, we should go to Archdale or King and get another quart of Sig 1/2A fuel. I'm running low, but I have enough to run the TD's. I'll call them to see who has it in stock.

Thought I'd share a few pic's of my Sky Drill. I don't know if they are in order or not. I think one shows the nice clean lazer cut parts. Many parts are stages for the pictures. I'm using a .06 paw diesel motor so I'm putting a exhaust pipe from th motor muffler inside to the back or the plane. It comes out just in front of the tail wheel. Other than the short plastic tubing on each end the main exhaust pipe is alumunium tin foil. I can't take credit for it, I seen a post from someone else that did it here on rcu. Last weighing was 9 oz and I still had to cover it, add wheels, fuel tank, and radio, and a little top sheeting. I still have trimming, sanding, etc to do.

Neat idea with the exhaust.
How it it balancing?
What size tank are you planning on?
How long did you make the L/G legs?
Have you checked the weight?

I haven't checked it for balance under the wing, but ist almost balanced resting on the landing gear. I'll use as large of a tank that I can fit in it. I checked a 2 oz angle tank and it doesn't fit the normal way but I don't know why one can't be used on its side. Landing gear took about 10 mins to bend. As it sits, its about 9 0z. Still needs radio, fuel tank, wheels, covering and a little top sheeting. I think thats about all it needs.

Wow, i'm glad to find a kit of this magnificent plane!!!
I build mine form the plans and is the best 1/2A plane I have ever flown, sure is worth to kit it.
Some friends here liked the plane but is kind of hard for them to build from plans.
Anyone willing to sell me a canopy??? is the only thing that my plane lacks and for sure will like to put one on it.
Saludos.

Ola Bolio,,.... Thank you for the compliment on the Skydrill... Do you have a picture of yours?
I can help you with the canopy but not with any ARF's for your friends. Don't have a China connection.. I believe Global (Hobby People) was having ARF's made in Mexico at one time.

Hi Bolio... You model is a "Kaotic" by PTUlmer . The Skydrill is a variation of tha Kaotic.. A little tuck here, a tiny squeeze there to make it Kit friendly. The Skydrill free plan is on PT's site though.

Hi again. Well I at the point where I have to start thinking about the center of gravity of my sky drill. Well it appears that with the .06 paw diesel I'm using, it's now nose heavy. Evey if I was going to use a 049 I'd still have problems fitting everything in. It would be real nice if I could use a smaller battary pack.
Where do you battary at. Is it smaller than most? The one I have is the size if 4 double A's. It would be nicer if I could use 4 triple a battarys as they would fit a lit better. Since I'm nose heavy I have to move the battary back but I don't want it to interfer with the servo's. Any ideas? Terry

I bought a 9 volts rechargeable battery at Radio Shack and used four of the 7 cells inside that battery, they have a 150 mah capacity and I can make 5 flights before recharging, weight really light.
Saludos.

The Proto has 1/2 of one of these... Laying under the tank.

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...36&I=LXGBL7&P=

If it's nose heavy a small battery can be poked in aft of F-3.

Skaliwag, That's a 9.6 volt battary. Isn't that too much voltage for a receiver that normally uses about 5 volts? Isn't that the same as a transmitter battary? Terry

I played with the Radio Shack 9.6v rechargables a while back and found they do not like to be Zap charged. Also found a 5 pack system worked the best, small servos suck up the juice.

Steve, Do think you have the small battarys that I need for the skydrill? Half the size of the one you posted above. Terry

The best 1/2A rx packs I have found are the 370mah NiMH packs from Radical R/C. They weight one ounce and cost $13 with connector. I have done as many as eight flights on a charge with plenty left over. That's with two HS-55's and a 1oz tank. I like to play it safe, but I'll bet you could easily get ten or more flights on one charge. I love these packs.

They are the 7th, 8th and 9th ones down in the list:

Well,.... here are a few of my latest pictures of my sky drill. I have a few more things to do it but its about 98% done. I'm waiting for the battary to arrive from Radial RC. With the diesel it is nose heavy so I'm going to have to move the battary back somehow/somplace. I think if I move it behind the servos, it will be tail heavy. I'll try it and see. This is a nice kit that I got from steve at select hobbies. It has taught me how to build light. I still have a lot to to learn but who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks. Terry

Plane looks just great. You're gonna have a hard time getting it of the pebbles with those wheels though....
Love the graphics.. Do tell where you got the font and how you "waved" it..
I would seal where the Pipe goes through the firewall.. PAW's are slobery.. Perhaps someone here could suggest what to use?
