I built an Ace Ultimate also.. I, too, loved the Bulldog color scheme & tried to model mine after LeRoy's.. I Love your cowling! I made mine 'outta Glass & im not real happy w/ it.. U still have the mold for an ABS one? care to make me one? & maybe some wheel pants?

I powered mine w/ an OS 26 FS, but i've yet to fly it; the field close to home closed.

I have some pics of mine in my photo gallery ( srt5321)

The paint I used was Tremclad. I think it is Rustoleum in the US. It is fuel proof if you allow it to cure for a week.

To prep the parts all I did was sand them with 400 grit paper to take the shine off and clean them with alcohol.

My cowl would be too small for the ACE Ultimate.

Nice job on your ACE. I really like the Bulldog colour scheme. I have a multi view showing the layout of the graphics if you want it. Here's a link:

You can download the graphics from Jims web site at http://www.bulldogairshows.com

Default The Cockpit

I printed the panel on my inkjet, laminated it and then ironed it on with Balsarite. I cut some cockpit coaming in half and glued it around the edge to finish it off. The large dial in the centre is less than 3/16" in diameter.

I'd show you the colour scheme, but I don't want to ruin the surprise. It's nothing spectacular, but I think it'll look nice.

I can never seem to find things like landing gear in sizes I need, so I have to make a lot of stuff. It's more time consuming, but it's more fun too. Wait 'till you see the plastic spinner I made aluminum.

Default Almost Done

Getting close.
I still need to attach the aileron interconnects, install the RX and switch and trim the canopy.
All up weight will be around 19oz which isn't bad because it has nearly 260 sq inches of wing area.

The construction photos are on the design contest web site. http://www.donatelli.net/contest

If it flies well, I'll be selling plans and parts.

I took the Ultimate out for it's first flight today. It was a beautiful day, but a bit windy. You can see the video on the contest site. The elevator was quite a bit out of trim, but the Norvel .061 had no problems hauling it into the air.

I had problems with the muffler pressure line inside the cowl causing the engine to quit, so I had to land dead stick. I'll get it out again soon for more video.

Unfortunately my videographer lost sight of it shortly after takeoff.

Hey, yet another question- what did you use for the landing gear??

I cut the landing gear from 3/32" aluminum. I made all the aluminum parts by scoring the aluminum several times on each side with a box cutter knife and then snapping it off and filing the edges. It sounds like a lot more work than it actually is.

Send me a PM if you're interested in plans and parts.

Looks fabulous! Plenty of vertical too, considering the engine was being cantankerous....

Hope you get to fly it some more, soon. Gorgeous airplane...

Great looking biplanes (and duh on my part regarding the 1/2A dubro spinner = I recognized my error as I was reading your reply).

Your Ultimate is just another reason why this contest has been so much fun to watch. Great craftmanship!
