Default Do you think it will go vertical?

After my heartbreaking experience of putting my DNU in on the nose in the final heat of the last reedie race I attending, the airframe got stuck in a corner and ignored. Probably due to the embarrassment factor. I tried to blame Vic, but he wasn't having any of that. Just mean, man. Then I drew up the twin mod and built the engine pods and set it aside again. Well, the twelve pack in my shop fridge began calling my name Monday night and over the period of three days the beer disappeared and this resulted.
A few concerns have resulted. Nothing to stop me from attempting to fly it this weekend, but what do you guys think the effect of overlapping the props will be?

I think if you get them all three spinning at the same time and if you remember to charge the receiver and transmitter batteries, then you are gonna have a ball.

Overlapping props? Why worry with that? Should too many wind generators prove a problem, you have two extras and you can always resort to forgetting to crank that one on the nose and have a nice twin.

In my zeal I forgot to answer your 1st question: "Do you think it will go vertical?"

Vertical up or vertical down?

Pretty brutal if you get your finger in there [:@]

I'll take a wild guess you're gonna start the two outboards first.

One of my worries was that it might unload a portion of the prop or change the effective angle-of-attack and cause something bizarre like the prop moving out of the plane of rotation in that area.

MJD, the plan was to use some APC e-props and run one backwards. But having that many APC's swinging out there is a frightening without doing anything but thinking it. It may be best to use rubber duckies and turn them all the same direction! Oh, and you guessed right. Assuming that they get equal loads of fuel, that should solve engine-out problems typical of twins?

Now we're talkin'!
Figure at least 30 ozs of thrust, probably more like 36. I like that chrome fin, just a little bit smaller than a Canadian dollar.
You might consider a working rudder.....a BFR.
Always turn against the engine on the wing that is still running.
Don't forget to check the CG of this thing....
you must have been drinking Tres Equis?
Oh, don't sweat rpm differences too much, that is what your BFR is for.

I doubt there is reason to be concerned about the prop overlapping. While not a popular design feature it has been done successfully. Check out the twin Piper Cub halfway down the page of this website:
http://home.att.net/~berliner-Ultrasonics/aviatn-6.html

Definitely some prop overlap going on there! With the Cub the props are much closer together and I would imagine that starting, extra noise and harmonic vibration would be quite a concern.

Fiddlers green card models even has a model of the Wagner twin Cub available!

I suspect you'll find that overlapping won't cause a bit of trouble. Having the wing engines as close inboard as possible can only help.

Hi PT,
Sure it will go vertical. I just want to know if it will do a wing over if one quits You could name it "The Mangler" and be careful it doesn't live up to it's name.

If you're looking for a name, I vote for 'Langolier'. Remember the Sci-Fi channel miniseries of the same name based on a Stephen King movie? Langoliers are a sort of demon thing that devour everything.

DNU - Dat's Nice Ulmer!

I think we're as excited as you to see this thing fly. You WILL have a cameraman won't you? (as well as a spare pair of briefs)

Chad wins. He drank the most last night.[sm=bananahead.gif] Unfortunately, the wife will have the regular video camera at Graceland. The ol' standby will be pressed into service, but it doesn't have image stabilization, etc. But, you can see through women's clothing if you use the night vision mode during the daytime. (not that I've tried!)

Actually the Langoliers were both the builders AND the destroyers of the "set" after it wasn't needed any more. At least that's how the movie set it out.

So in that way Patrick IS a Langolier. He builds and then he destroys when the moment is past....

very good advice this way when the outboard quit you still have the front pulling a little so can make a good landing. kinda like a throttle

DT wins! I like the name. Bruce, you must be thinking of the Twilight Zone episode. The Langoliers were evil little buggers. Maybe the analogy does hold up. . .

From Wikipedia: the "Langoliers", small demonic beasts with fast legs that chase down the purposeless and lazy, and eat them alive.

The Update: no point in pics, the fuselage is completely repaired, a new hatch made and the whole mess got a couple of coats of balsarite. Also, the DNU plan is being converted to the Langolier. The new fin (the only major change aside from the engine pods) is a tad more than 12 sq in, about one "sqin" more than the original. Watcha think of the shape?

I think the aft edge of the rudder ought to have a jagged edge to it...maybe a toothy pattern like it was cut with pinking shears?

That looks pretty good, it could be a little bigger. I'm going to look through some old German bombers for examples.

....don't see anything from WWI quite like yours, carry on Herr Ulmer.

All the rest is easy. Cutting this out of monokote for the nose art is going to be a bear!
