...And some more:

There were lots more that I do not have. Also, I have included .045, .049, .065, 074, .09, and one .11 ... mostly from the fifties, with a few newer ones.

Royal Spitfire .065's, Spitzy .045, Testors 8000's (hmmm... .8cc=.049ci) Note the reverse pitch prop on the Spitzy...just for the pic, it runs CCW.

Well, now I have a DQA with Pee Wee .020, Mule transmitter, SH100 receiver and Citizen-ship escapement. Flew it a few months ago. It has around 80 flights to date. Then my Minnie mambo with OK Cub .049 and Ace single channel pulser. Also flew it a few months ago. Close to 400 flights now!! My Little Esquire has a Medallion .049 with Ace Pulser and 100 flights. Crashed my Twin Tee Dee .010 with receiver problems. Doing a rebuild. Got a Pee Wee .020 on a Wee Stick with Mattel single channel pulser. My little Classic Coupe with Cox SS.049. My little Christy Bipe with Pee Wee .020 (Originally had a Tee Dee .010 But I wanted more 3D capability!!) Then there’s the QuickShots with Black Widows and a few more secret weapons no one has seen yet!!!

Bob Harris

BTW: I do fly some with those new modern unreliable radio systems. But I prefer the older radios. Work much better!!![sm=bananahead.gif]

Great stuff. I have an OS .09 and a couple of Gilberts but I gave my Atwood to my buddy for Christmas.

Default RE: What's your flyable Cox engine inventory right now?

In my Cox & 1/2A inventory I have :-

2 x TD .049
1 x Black Widow .049 (with TD .051 top end)
3 or 4 x Babe Bee .049 (not sure how many- one assembled, rest parts)
plus an as-yet unused Davis diesel head, and
a Black Widow .049 on loan from Mike "Luna Rendezvous".

Other small engines :-

1 x Wen Mac .049 mk III
1 x Norvel BigMig .061 "revlite" (wonderful engine - want as many as I can get)
1 x Enya 09-III
1 x OS 10 FSR-S
1 x Enya 09-IV (*winner* - this engine is the best value currently produced glow below 2cc)

Want :-

- Cox Pee Wee .020
- Cox TD .020
- Cox TD .051
- Cox Medallion .049*
- Cox Golden Bee .049
- Norvel .049 AME or BigMig
- PAW .049 or .06
- Enya .06-D II
- MK 17 diesel
- PAW 09
- Cox TD .09

Regret:

- Selling my TD .010 on eBay for a wad of cash, but it did pay for my Saito 30.
- That my Medallion .15 went missing from my parents place after I left home.

Postscript:

While this is a Cox thread - if I was told that I could fly with one, and only one small engine from now on, I would choose the Enya 09-IV.

cheers,
Colin

Reggie,
Did you anodize those cases yourself? I see some that are not the standard Cox colors.

Colin,
Another great .09...but no longer in production, is the MVVS .09 diesel.

Default RE: What's your flyable Cox engine inventory right now?

Hi George, Yep all custom work done in house. I do it all anodizing, powder coat, & custom machine work. I can take a stock Surestart engine and squeeze out over 20K RPMs with a 4.75 X 4 APC propeller using only modified stock surestart parts. Not bad for a $10 engine. Then to the cosmetic side I anodize or powder coat the block. The biggest obstacle I have achieved is milling the inside of the .049 piston like the Venom's. Unlike Cox I mill the skirt and not up around the top part of the piston where the Venom's stock piston blows the top off. Attached to the post is 2 Cox .049 piston's the one on the left is my custom light weight piston vs. the stock.

If anyone needs any help or parts please visit this website vintageglowengines.com we have 1,000's of Cox parts and 1,000's of engines.

Off to the shop, Reggie

Col,
I'm surprised you don't have a Golden Bee on your list, there a real sweetie of an engine, not quite as powerful as the Black Widow, but has a better run time. Next time we fly I'll bring it a long; I think it will work great on your Wing-Thing.

Default RE: What's your flyable Cox engine inventory right now?

Nice work!

I have recently got interested in Cox engines and bought some. Currently I am experimenting with making a new piston for a tired Tee Dee 051. I have some titanium and realize that it'is lighter than the steel, just as strong and has a lower thermal expansion coefficient so it should loosen as the engine heats up rather than tightening.

If I get the hang of machining the Ti I shall also try to make a new con rod from it. I have some 7075 chrome moly high strength steel and might try a new crankshaft. If I get that far and the engine runs I shall make a new barrel in the style of a Special 15 Mk2 or Conquest with Schnuerle porting and a single exhaust port.

I have also ordered a magnesium billet to make a lighter crankcase, and already have a Galbraith head and Nelson plug.

My Tee Dee 051 would then be what we might have expected to have seen Cox come up with if it had stayed as the L.M. Cox company. It won't have much Cox left except for the style.

Any comments? Is your 1/2A project directed along similar lines?

Good question. I interpreted it as being able to install in a plane and fly...but I guess that's more "runable" than "flyable". Hmmm...

I'm absolutely in awe of Reggie's (VintageGlowEngines) Cox shrine. Some folks just have all the goodies don't they? =)
My personal Cox collection is rag-tag, they are all runners, no shelf queens to speak of. Too bad I can't really consider the mountain of lowly sure starts *true* Cox engines, because it seems that the pride and workmanship that went into these little jewels back in the day, is completely absent.

My cox collection isn't nearly as large as some here (got enough for my lifetime though), but every time I hear someone whine about Norvels I get a little guilty. Ive got something like 40 of them, with tons of spares. Even hard to find stuff like .074 plugs.... got 21 of those and may pick up another 3 soon. Someday someone's going to need this stuff, I'll just hang on to it for now.

I've got quite a few Cox engines and recently started to make display boxes for them

The little Space Hopper .049 has been a favorite for many years as it was the only beam mount rear intake .049 Cox ever made.

I have a couple of Space Bug .049's and found a backplate assy from a Thermal Hopper and decided to convert it to a full TH engine. After I finished it I took a picture and then realized the backplate had been trimmed down for use in a C/L Speed model.

Well I`m a little late catching up with this old thread , but I have a modest little cox collction:
1 teedee.010 with throttle ring
2 peewee 020`s
1teedee.020 w/throttle ring
1goldenbee.049
1teedee.049 r/c ( carbed)
1medallion.09 ( only ran 3 times to break it in, including 1 taxi w/o wing) I didn`t like the lame throttle so I never flew it

the .010 is on a clancy aviation little plane that could , just plain twitchy flights lol

A peewee 020 on my littlest stick ready for install radio equipment and fly again

the 049`s and 09 have been retired , I haven`t flown the ace alpha`s they are for in ages , I retired from flying planes that large

Default RE: What's your flyable Cox engine inventory right now?

Although I got my first Cox engine in the late sixties, all of my collection today was acquired in the last 3 months.

I have:

From Bernie & Zena

(4) New Sure Start .049
(2) New Babe Bee .049

Used from swap meet

(1) TD .049
(1) Black Widow .049
(1) Golden Bee .049

From hobby shop in Milwaukee

(1) NIB (cardboard box) TD .049

From Ebay

(3) NIB (cardboard box) TD .049
(1) NIB (plastic jewel box) TD .049 w/extra glowhead
(1) NIB (cardboard box) Babe Bee .049
(2) Used TD .049
(1) Used TD .010
(1) Used TD .020
(1) NIB (cardboard box) Pee Wee .020
(1) NIP (blister pack) Pee Wee .020
(1) Used Pee Wee .020
(1) NIP (blister pack) Babe Bee .049 w/new glowhead
(1) New (no box) Medallion .15 w/throttle
(1) Used Medallion .15 in plastic jewel box w/wrenches and standard plug adapter
(1) Used Thermal Hopper .049
(1) Used Medallion .09 w/throttle

And this that belonged to my dad

(1) NIB (cardboard box) QRC .049 and a mostly built Airtronics Q-Tee

The new Medallion .15 was a steal! The guy was sure it was new but listed it as used since he was not the original owner. When I got it I could tell it was new, not a mark of any kind on it!

The prize of my collection though would have to be the Babe Bee in the blister pack. The price on it is $3.98 and came with a new glow head, also in blister pack, priced at $.65!

The TD .049 I got from the hobby shop in Milwaukee was purchased before I did my homework and therefore I paid way too much for it! I was told these go for $150 on Ebay so the price of $85 seemed like a deal. All of the other cardboard box'd TD's I bought cost me under $60 and the one in the plastic jewel case w/extra glowhead was only $68! Oh well, live and learn.

That's 37, 38 if you want to include my RJL(formerly Cox Conquest) .15

Since other engines in this range have been mentioned, I also have quite a few Cub .049s, including a diesel .049, several .074s,and a couple .099s, including the one I bought about 1949. Also a couple Wen Mac .049s, a Fox .049s, an AME .049, several Norvel .049 and .061, a Norvel .074, a TT .074, a couple A-P .061 and .09s, a Fox .074RC, a Fox .10RC, a McCoy .098 an OS Pet .099 RC, and a K&B .09. Also many Fox .15s, and a K&B .15.

And long gone are a Space Bug .049, an RR-1 .049, probably 10 other reedy .049s, a Medallion .049, a couple Medallion .09s, a coul Cub .049s, a Baby Mac McCoy .049, a Fox Rocket .099, and a few Fox .15s. an old Cox Sportsman .15. Oh, and an old Coby .12 or .15. That was an old 1940s ignition engine in a very small size for the time.
