Default Designing Twin / Multi 1/2A's

I am thinking of trying a design for a twin engined 1/2A - possibly a Vickers Wellington or similar.

Given my limited design skills, I want to collect everyone's ideas first since this forum has alot of 1/2A experience:

- Choosing Airfoil / Wing Area
- Goal weight & wing loading
- Engine: thrust alignment, tuning 1/2A twins, servo setup
- Retracts? I know Robart makes a 1/2A version...

Thanks,
Brian

Default Designing Twin / Multi 1/2A's

Hi Brian,

Here's the specs. on my Twin Lizzie 2 which ROG's on grass and flies great on 2 throttled TD .049's. She will fly "on the wing" at 25-30% power and floats in on landings. Single engine performance is great AS LONG AS SHE HAS ALTITUDE TO SPARE! I have looped and rolled her on 1 engine from a shallow dive but She DOESN'T LIKE to climb on one engine....it's like walking on eggshells, you have to be VERY smooth on the controls.

Span: 52.8" Area: 408 Sq. In.
Weight (incl. 2 oz. noseweight ) 35 0z.
Wing loading: 12.35 oz./sq. ft.
Selig S8037 Airfoil (16%)
H/Stab Area: 97 Sq. in. - 23.7%
V/Stab Area: 43 Sq. in. - 10.5%

I used 1 GWS .35 oz. servo per each nacelle for throttle and made the nacelles easily removable (like little bolt-on fuselages) to easily service linkage and fuel tanks. Guess what, I've never had to service them! If you build everything in and don't allow for tinkering, you KNOW you'll have trouble.

Mine was built with 2 deg. downthrust and no sidethrust but if I had it to do over, I would put out-thrust in both engines (2-3 deg in left engine, 4-5 deg. in right. If your plane has twin rudders, you could build in some toe-in, this should help a little in engine out emergencies as well.

I messed around with quite a few engines, running them on a single engine plane, learning each one until I was able to pick 2 that I had reasonable confidence in.

I'd love to see a twin Mustang myself on 2 .074's...

LR -

A Twin Mustang would be great! I have been thinking of twins for quite awhile - tons to choose from: C-119 Flying Boxcar, B-25 Mitchell, P-38 Lightning, DC-3, Douglas A-20 Havoc, B-26, whew.... and many, many more.

I have a friend who started a Dehavilland Rapide = gorgeous biplane with cowlings that fit the TD 049's perfect!

I can't wait to get started doodling one in CAD - once I get the basic parameters.

Thanks DB for your input, always appreciated. Wish I could have seen the Twin Lizzie fly at SMALL.
