Default A day with Rocket Rob

Thanks to rocket's hospitality, I spent a great day at his club field, SACRATS just outside of San Francisco. They've got a great set up with astroturf, work benches and an organized pit area. Rob flew for about a 1/2 hour on 1oz of diesel with his little plane. Lots of other great planes on the field that morning, and I even managed to get in a flight with my Eindecker. But dang that sun and a dark red airplane- I lost my orientation just as a gust of wind picked up and had a hard landing, no damage apart from a broken prop so it's a good day.

Thanks, Rob and all the other guys at the field. I hope to see you again soon!

One of those looks like your Mustang CP!
Were you there too?
TJ, I know how you feel flying with one of your RCU brothers you never thought you would meet. Rob, next time I'm in SJ/Valecitos I'll give you a call.
Vas is Das with the US marked pj looking thing?

TJ if you get down to San Jose be sure to go to Dimaggios and eat a Muncher Cruncher calzone.

Right on Vic, I'm not far from San Jose and I'll be sure to get a calzone, sounds good!

The V1 with US markings is authentic, it was one of the test platforms the US built after the war. Interestingly, the US built more V1s than Germany. That little bugger is launched on a high start and is an excellent flyer. I'm going to have to buy me one!

Its a lecky fan, I think a speed 400 or something about that. It would be cool to get a "buzz" unit of some type in there for the authentic sounds. I can't remember what he said the manufacturer was, but it's a kit that is available (for the right price).

It is a super flyer and looks really good in the air. An authentic landing would be fun, but expensive.

You'll get a scale landing some day.. ;-)

The Germans built something like 35,000 V-1's but only about 9500-10,000 or so were launched. Lots of parts to play with. I guess the US used these up and also developed their own "Loon" during or afterwards.

One day someone needs to pilot an Fi103R at an airshow. I'd drive to see that.

Jack,
It was nice to have you out - and weather cooperated!
It is a great club and a good group.
The V1 thing is by K & A Models - very nice light glass - and domesticly produced!
[link=http://www.kamodels.com/]K&AModels[/link]

He has started fully molding the wings on some of his kits and the workmanship is very nice.
He has an A6, big Mig 15 and the ME 163 are all on my short list

Hey Rocket Rob, what did your Lil Rascal weigh in at? I finally got done with mine with the Norvel .049 and it weighs 10 oz's dry. I put the Lil Extra tailwheel on there like you put on yours. Had to cut the rudder hinges though and re-hinge it to get it in but thanks for the tip, it looks good! Can't wait to get it flying.

Hey Entropy,

I rechecked my thread in diesel-land and it weighted 8.4 ozs dry ready for maiden.
I'll bet yours will fly very spirited!
Keep us posted.

Hey Tangarine....If you are around again this weekend we will be going back out Sat am.
I could help dig up some screws for the Cox powered plane and or better yet bring out my Champion design Eindecker powered by 1949 Mills diesel - don't really know who would have power on who.......

You're on Rocket! I'll see you on Saturday. I'll be in town until next Wednesday, then home for Easter, then back again for one more week.

Bring your Eindecker, we can have a flat-bottom airfoil, aerodynamics-like-a-brick air combat! To tell the truth, I was feeling inadequate with the whole Eindecker vs. P 51 thing, so it will be nice to have some equivelent competition. I went by Aeromicro and resisted the temptation to spend a lot of money, but I did pick up some screws for the Mayfly, so it'll be ready for it's maiden flight.

Well now, that would imply that I will be BEHIND you. Sounds like a race to me. Anybody interested in a diesel vs electric Eindecker pylon race?

Geez, Astroturf.

I just spent all afternoon digging out the driveway from 6" of snow and drifts some two feet high. [:'(]

I think I'm getting cabin fever.

Well the 'air combat' / 'pylon race' / 'east vs west' with WWI airframes was an interesting thing to see. I am surprized that my plane had more power and a longer duration that the diesel, but I did have a larger prop so it chewed up more air. Both planes flew the same (like a kite with a motor), so at least my building ability is moderatly acceptable or at least equal in simple things to Rob.

I had a great time, and Rob is an excellent host. A big thanks to everyone at SACRATs club! Yuz guys are da bomb!

Yes I do but you need a sunny day, little wind and temps not much below the freezing mark. Getting all three on the same day has been the problem. I'm basically a center, small 'L' liberal but I've noticed how Global Warming was changed to "Climate Change". Sure, right. I'm still waiting for the day we have to dodge coconuts at Christmas. Apparently, the Rovers have detected a warming trend on MARS. So who's making a carbon footprint up there? Look up "little ice age".

Anyway, I'm green with envy,, does that make me environmentally repsonsible? Yeah, cabin fever for sure. [sm=bananahead.gif]

Andy, I have a friend who gets me through the darkest days of Winter. His name is Yukon Jack. We don't visit that often, but he always leaves a good impression.

I had to look it up,,,,

Yukon Jack is a "honey based Canadian whiskey advertised as the "Black sheep of Canadian Liqueur". It is a 100 proof (in USA) or 80 (in Canada) proof drink"

I'll go get me some. [8D]

It is so good, 100,000 perfect little sips in each bottle. 100 proof, tastes more like 10 proof......but beware of the last sips in the bottle, more like 190 proof.
A "Rocket Rob", sounds like something that the "ravers" mix up to keep the party going?
