Default packaging tape

hi,

What do you think about covering foam wings with colored packaging tape? It is cheap, strong and easy to apply, should be light too!

Works well, but isn`T totally permanent, as the oil generally slowly breaks down the adhesive of the tape. but that said my tapey plane was still fine after god knows how many flights.
the tape over foam construction is really crash resistant- great for a trainer. fast to make , too

Default re

what if one sprays some 3m77 over the foam to help the tape sticking?

did that a few times until i discovered the paper-and-thinned-elmers-glue type of covering. makes a much stiffer wing and is fuelproof if the right type of waterbased clearcoat is used.

Default Curious

Hi Dave,

You have piqued my curiousity with your comments about the paper covering. How about a quick run down on how you do the process? Please? What is the "right waterbased clear" to use? How heavy is the covering? Thanks in advance... Jeff....

http://www.rcuniverse.com/showthread...ght=foam+paper
here you'll find some more info

for a clearcoat i use a water based "varnish" for wood, the type that looks milky in the can. before this i use normal acrylic house paints and magic markers for my color schemes. if you like cheap, quick, light and strong (who doesn't) give this a try, you'll be hooked.

Default Thanks Dave

Dave,

Thanks for the info. Just one more question: What's a good source for the 2.2lb foam? Is this a building supply item? Thanks again..... Jeff

i use building insulation thats made here for the local and euro markets. i think you guys have the pink, blue and grey foams that should all work. i think the grey is the heaviest and about the same as the yellow stuff i use. the main advantage in using the heavier foams is that you don't need any wooden spars or leading edge to get a durable wing.
