Default Kalper Reproduction .32cc Diesels

I have two reproduction Kalper diesels that I'm photographing for future sales and thought some of the guys might like to see the differences.

Arne Hende' made the Kalper Mk-1 and VA made the Kalper Mk-II.

Notice the different intake designs.

Nice stuff! I'm not collecting any engines (on purpose that is) but it would be nice to have an AH engine or two. I believe Arne has past away so there will not be any new ones made...

That second one is the .003 cu in or something silly isn't it, smaller than an .010 at least?

0.1CC is .0061ci. I have an AE 0.1. They are supposed to run OK, but based on the figures I've seen it makes a whopping 7 watts (.009 HP) output. I have never run it but scaled a set of Telemaster drawings for it. Hopefully someday soon.

Dan have you been able to run the little AH (tigercub) .1cc?
I had two, one in one of your jewel cases which I never took out and onother one. I could never get it to run so I sold off both of them - It just had poor compression. But was pretty! Woud make some nice cufflinks

My little AE .1 spins the cox prop 17K - a real ripsnorter! Make that 17,300! and the thrust program lists it at .004hp
It is just about the time it starts -
it runs out of fuel.......

Wow, 17k? You better get one of Steve's CF .010 props..

I am half done my .010 Tomboy, it's scaled to 22" span. But that still sound a little big. You need a Tom Thumb!

Rob... Don't start that giant with the Valantine sitting on the ledge... It will suck it in and blow it out as a Cox con rod.
I do lust more for the jewels Mr Dan is showing us but the Hunky billet from Mr. Jet that Mr Rob is exposing sure is a masterpiece in engineering.

RocketBob,

No, I've never run my AH mini Oliver Tigers.

Arne made two separate vesions. The first one was for Dave Platt and it had an incorrect taper on the muff, an oversized prop nut, incorrect "U" profile on the prop driver and the NVA was too sensitive.

Arne then designed a totally new version which is supposed to be a real bear.

The one on the left was the Dave Platt, or first version. I tried to get Arne to make a more usable size Oliver, such as a 1.0cc but he never got around to it.

I did get his ear on the McCoy, Dooling, Fox, and Elf .09's though.

I put those Kalpers up on ebay tonight and they had a bid within minutes. Usually guys wait until the last day to bid on stuff. I also have four little Mills engines that I will be selling off and the black 0.25cc has an RC carb. I don't have time to play with a carb on an engine that small.

Sorry Dan, I was unclear.
I was referring to his .1cc engines which I called mini cubs-thinking that was the closest resemblence.
I could never get mine running and decided to send them to someone to live on their shelf before my frustration led me to trying to start it in anger.

I love the little cubs and .25 va -

Correct-Arne Hende died of cancer a couple of years ago. However-do you know that Olivers are being made again? Check out the Barton Model flying site discussion group (google it)-there is an extensive thread there on the new Oliver production. A guy called Tom Ridley is behind it-and he is getting technical assistance and oversight from John Oliver (the son) himself. They are using stocks of original (and some new) Oliver components and original tooling where it is appropriate-so these engines are 'original' in the sense of being a continuation of production. As well as 'genuine' Olivers they are also producing the 0.5cc Oliver replica that Arne Hende produced. Hmm-that creates a bit of an interesting conundrum-what do you technically call a replica produced by the original manufacturer of a replica of an Oliver? So the AH Oliver 0.5cc will live again! [but the prices will be hefty!]

Interesting question,

Oliver never made a production .5cc engine.

Dave Platt loved Oliver engines so he had Arne make a run of .5cc diesel engine that looked like an Oliver and was called a "Mini-Tiger" replica.

A Replica is usually a smaller version of a famous larger engine. A reproduction is a newer version of same-size engine.

When I made the original boxes Arne requested that the name Oliver would not be printed on the box. Arne wanted simple black lettering on a one color background. Later on I made a special box for my early .5 TC and added an Oliver logo, just for the one in my collection.

Then Arne refined the design and made a second version that looked more like an Oliver Tiger.

Now someone is copying Arne's .5cc replica engine but has John Oliver's blessing so now it can be officially called an Oliver but it is actually a reproduction of an Arne Hende' engine.

Wait, my brain is going off-scale hot and there's smoke coming out of my ears.

Arne had several machine shops make parts for his engines all over Europe so evidently someone has contracted with the original manufacturers or created new tooling to match Arne's engines.

While the larger Oliver engines may be using tooling or original parts there is no way they can use off the shelf Oliver parts on an .5cc because they never made one, Arne did.

I would disagree only slightly Dan-a replica is simply an exact copy of an engine made by another manufacturer-it is usually the same size as the original (or very close to the original size-the MP Jet Letmo 2.5 being a good example-the original was 2.7cc, the MP Jet replica is 2.5cc, largely to meet the 2.5cc class limit (which didn't exist when the original was manufactured in 1947) The VA and AH miniatures are also replicas-but scale replicas-and in the overall scheme of things are a bit of an aberration-most replicas are NOT scaled down from the originals.
The reissue of an orginal manufacturers design by the same manufacturer is termed a reproduction [and these are the accepted terms in areas outside model engines as well-specifically vintage/classic cars and motorbikes]
I did not mean to imply that the 0.5cc Oliver was using Oliver parts as this was, as you point out impossible. But the remainder of the Oliver reproductions are using up stocks of original parts, and Oliver jigs and fixtures-where this is appropriate. Tom Ridley of course has access to production equipment that the Olivers could only have dreamed of-and there would be no point at all using a 50 year old jig or fixture if a 3 axis CNC machining centre could do the same job far more easily, quickly and economically and with greater accuracy. The great thing is, for diesel lovers-Olivers are available again-and they will be better than the originals thanks to better machining practices and better modern steels and casting alloys. There is a certain irony though that just as in their original heyday-the price for the new ones will put them out of reach of many modellers...........
