Default Carolina 1/2A Crew Fly-In and Reedie Race

OK guys, I’m trying to get a 1/2A meet together which will include the “Reedie” Racing as well as general flying. The spot is a private flying field where we’ve held some Quickie 500 races and practice. It has a 30 x 50 asphalt takeoff pad with 2 1700 ft grass runways. About 98 acres of open area to fly. The field is in Julian NC right off of 421. About 30 minutes from the field Rog has been having his fly-in at. Enough room for 2 flight lines so the flying would not have to stop during the races.

I’ve been flying some of my vintage single channel models there because it is so open so if one of the systems was to quit retrieving the model would be no problem. A great free flight place also!

What I need to decide is a good date. A spring date would be great. Just need to decide so I can nail down the day.

Brian, the field even has 2 ponds possibly float fly???? So what do you think??? I think we should open it up to all 1/2A designs both glow and electric.

Bob,

Sounds like a great plan to me. The field sounds like an excellent place to fly and hold a decent sized 1/2A / small electric event.

Maybe sometime Rainedav, myself and a few others can meet to do some prep / planning? Wouldn't mind the drive to Raleigh to do so.

Let's pick out a date and start planning!

Early April works best for me. The end of April through the middle of May I'm occupied with a lot of family committments. Sounds like fun. I have an EP Seawind that would qualify for the water flying and a Qwik-Shot that hasn't seen a race yet.

That feild is puuuuuuurrrrrrffffecccttt!!!! We will need to be careful not to run it too close to any racing. Mike R may know when CCRC is planning to hold their spring Race. When do Mike L and Jimmy plan to hold theirs? I'd love to come out!

April 17th sounds good to me. Is the weather by this time of year fairly clear, i.e. not much rain? Just thinking in terms of reliability / predictability for clear sunny weather.

Mid April does make sense to avoid the end of school season, graduations, etc.

Generally April through May are pretty good down here. Seeing how its a one day event lets hope for clear skies! BTW, 1/2A also means control line flying also. This field has enough room to fly C/L away from the RC flight line so Brian bring your kids and let do some circle flying!!

At the moment, 4/17/10 is good for me. I also have some 1/2A control line. A Beginner Ringmaster is ready and a Baby Ringmaster and sheet combat plane await paint.

Hollis, is that the Baby Ringmaster with .049 and built up wing? I want to build one of those. I won my first control line contest when I was around 6 years old with one of those. Do you have the plans?

Hi Bob, Yes, the Baby is .049 and has the built up wing (the Beginner has the sheet wing). I have the kit "plan" but it is just an isometric drawing showing how the parts go together since the kit was die cut parts and the le and te were notched for the ribs. I made patterns of all the parts except the ribs before I built it. I have two kit boxes that I kept. I built my first on around 1979. I had built and flown many 1/2A CL planes before that. I'll hang on to it until the event if you would like to take some measurements.

Unfortunatly the assembly inst. looked like this and while with the right attitude you could scale up the outlines in the corner, the ribs are still to be want.

Yeah, that's what I have. I made templates of everything but the ribs! Back on topic, I hope all works out for a good event in April.

Great! Looks like we are applying for an April 17, 2010 sanction so guys this is plenty of time to get something ready. I'll be putting a flyer together soon so keep glued to the dial (forum!).

Check out the web site The Brotherhood of the Ring Where Ringmasters Rule:
http://www.brotherhoodofthering.info...view.asp?fid=1

Under the general discussion there is a Beginner Ringmaster and a Baby Ringmaster thread. A plan listed there of the Beginner Ringmaster.

Bob - great... looking forward to April 17th. I hope the regular Carolina Crew show up along with many others in the vicinity (a state or two away). Always a great time when everyone gets together for a day of fun flying and hangar talk.

Bob, I will PM you to see how several of us can help out with the planning, food, etc.

Lesser of two weevils here;

As most of youse-all know, I would never stoop, lower myself, or otherwise engage in a self-gratifying, ego inflation. However, I would like to make the following two predictions . . .

1. As some of youse-all know, I am pleased to celebrate my favorite Federal 'holiday' in the middle of April each year. Since this reedie race will take place two days after that event - I predict that I will be able to attend (if I have recovered from the celebration.)

B. I will leave the TD .020 on my BITF and blow the doors off the competition in 'unlimited'.

III. I have a stock (except for KF wing) electric powered Blue Ray racer that I will pit against any same or similar design. (See the 'other' forum for details)

Four. As usual, I will bring the sodas.

Six. Where the heck is Julian?

Raymond,..Julian is 20 miles southwest of Burlington near Climax (just leave it alone), although I dont know where the field is, gotta be off 61 somewhere...its also very close to Archdale which has the legendary KC Hobby shop . really nice place to visit...not huge but a little of everything and people who know and enjoy their jobs its where I get my 1/2a fuel....Bob, I'll make it if I can,..either I will be at a new job (hopefully) or on unemployment,,so far in my 51 years I have taken about 3 weeks of unemployment, started working at 8 delivering eggs in the neighbor hood....remember when you collected pop bottles for 2-3 cents?...my allowance was 8 cents and I could get a nickel hershey bar and a tootsie pop!! man that was a long time ago , back when gas and cigarettes were 27 cents per gallon/pack..........I'm startin to feel old here........Rog
