I am not too sure if the gist of your post is your concern with Chinese made parts, design copy or both, but I shall address both issues.
First, let me assure you that your concerns are valid. My approach to China is a cautious one but the reality is that China can produce some tremendous quality. However, one must pay big $$’s for this and not seek bottom pricing. The Dell server that powers our store is manufactured there, for example.
As to the diesel conversions that we sell, they are 100% manufactured in the USA. They consist of 5 parts: Body, contra piston, compression screw, spring and Teflon disc.
The spring was manufactured by Pepka Spring in Kokomo, Indiana. The bodies, contra pistons and compression screws were manufactured by NAHMCO in Dayton, Nevada. The Teflon discs were supplied by a well-known Cox competitor of ours, who had them manufactured in the USA; although I don’t know by whom.
This may shock some of you but, of the 86 Cox parts that we have manufactured so far, only 6 were made in China. A further 2 were USA made; whereas a secondary operation was performed in China. This equates to 93% of items that we have made post-Cox are actually USA/Canada made.
To the issue of copying, I have stated this before; it was unintentional (seriously). I had entrusted a machine shop with the production of them; requesting a design similar to the inside but a strong variation to the outside. The new design they drew up was good and I approved production.
After months of inactivity on the part of the machine shop, I requested they send everything to a competing company. What I did not realize at the time is that they did not send the design modifications. I did not follow up either and therefore dropped the ball – my fault.
When the finished product arrived I literally gagged. However, I had the options of either scrapping the product or simply selling it. I choose the latter as the design was not the subject of design copyright. Well, at least it’s flattering to its creator, I guess 
. By the same token it does remain a blemish in my thoughts as that is not how we normally operate.
I continue to maintain that our products meet or exceed OEM Cox criteria and we unconditionally guarantee each and every item that that we sell.
