RE: Gear Downs for the Jagdpanther ?
Hi Jim,
I would be more interested in trying the 2:1 gear reductions before the 3:1 as the latter makes the tank too slow. The 3:1s on that link should fit but the shafts will not match the pinions so you will need to alter them. You will also soon be needing a mini gear puller as well if you want to play mix and match with gearboxes and motors. Some pnions are pressed on and some are secured with a set screw. You will also need to verify the pitch will match on the gears used. I use a heat gun to warm up pressed gears and a mini hammer or spring loaded center punch to fine set the pinions. Measure the offset and mark the shafts to enure proper alignment. NEVER hammer or press on the gears without supporting the shaft from the opposite end of the motor. I have been a auto mechanic for over 30 years and one trick that I use for the tanks is to insert a thin strip of paper between the teeth of the gears to provide the best relief or gap to eliminate binding.
I didn't hear anything on the lubrication issue or gearboxes covers idea...... What do you guys do?
