RE: 3 Giant Warbird Builds 1-P-40 2-Corsairs
All the way and I mean all the way!!! I've been sandin more and more of the saddles so the wing dowel lines up with the hole in the fuse. It started out 3/4" to low which would off given me negitive incidence. I have bee slowly sanding a little bit off each side and then putting the wing back on to see if I sanded even and it was still level. I ended up sanding 3/4" off the front 1/3 of each saddle to get the dowl in the hole. I then sanded anoth 1/32" for the liner to have space. I still have a gap in the middle of about 1/8" but with epoxy and microballons it will make a perfect wing saddle. I went to a cabinet shop where I always go to get thick maple or whatever type wood I need. Today I went there and asked for 8/4" maple and all he had was a fireplace mantle out of a church that was built in the mid 1800's around 1865 before heat. He said he wouldn't part with it but for his project he only needed 8" so he gave me 2 feet for free out of the 12 foot mantle. Turns out it is 3"x8"x24" And is over 145 years old. Now that is what I call aged wood. Plus it's clear. Not one knot in the whole 12 foot board. Here it is before I start chopping it up for hold down blocks.
