I don't have El-Mod but here are some tips which might help:
To record video from YouTube videos you will need a software program that allows you to record streaming audio from websites. You may find some free ones out there but I am always concerned they might be spyware. I have used [link=http://www.wondershare.com/pro/streaming-audio-recorder.html]Wondershare Streaming Audio Recorder[/link] and have found it to work very well once you figure it out. It costs about $30. You can also download it as a free trial if you just want to try it first.
Another thing I thought about, instead of stripping either the left or right track to end up with a "mono" track, why not mix the two tracks and convert to mono? That way you are not losing any audio information.
