You could use the DIP switches like off of an old networking card. The muffler shield could hinge upward, hiding the switch panel under it.
Its quite easy to make hinges with thin sheet metal and fine wire, or even paper tape. Secure it closed with a small piece of that fridge-magnet tape. With a locator/antislip pin and a magnet, you really don't need hinges even (think like the Leo 2A6's intake grilles)

The dip switch thing is an excellent idea. You could change up the lighting look really easy if you brought it all back to a DIP buss.
