There are several ways to operate spoilers.

STRING METHOD

The Spirit manual is based on the string technique which works well. My Sagitta 600 was set up that way. A central servo attaches to strings which run through the wings. The servo pulls the stringswhich operater the spoilers. This technique is light and easy to do.

There is usually an offset arm or similar placed on the spoiler where you attach the string. Several attachment methods canbe used.

Mine was based on the string going through a hole in the arm. The hole was sized so a toothpickcould be jammed into the hole but would not go through. You pulled thestring through the hole and then jammedthe toothpick in place tohold it. If the string tried to pull out it would pull the toothpick into the hole and tighten it.

Getting the spoilers even can be a beast. This attachment method made it VERYeasy to adjust the two spoilers so they were even. You only need one servo to run the spoilers and heavy thread, unwaxed dental floss or some other strong, light string will work.

You only need oneservo and one channelon the radio.You can fly this RESarrangement with a simple 3 channel radio.

With this arrangement there is always the issue of howto keep the spoilers down. On mine each spoiler has a 1/4 ounce weight.But if you go inverted, the spoilers will open. However the only timeI would fly my planeinverted was when I wanted to lose altitude fast so this was not an issue.

Occasionally onlaunch I would see the spoilers lift a little as the plane went up the hi-start or winch. Wasn't a real problem, but not optimum. Some use rubberbands to hold the spoilerdown. This places more load on the servo but an HS-81 or 82has more than enough to overcomea light rubberband. Youjust have to change them from time to time.

In the photos you see an HS-81 with a screw/washer on the control arm. The strings have a loop which go over the screw after I attach the wing. The string lives in the wing.The silver screweye that is just behind the servo serves as a smooth turn point so the stings don't drag on the wood and they move at a 90 degree angle into the wing. Low friction and easy to rig when you are setting up the plane.

Those are GWSMini servos for R/Ewhich would also work in the Spirit. They are smaller than standard size servos, about the size of a Hitec HS-85.They would fit better under the Spirit canopy as compared to a standard size servo.
