Henry gave me a old style big head Saito 120 once. It had dropped a valve and Horizon wouldn't fix it. Lucky there was no collision
The engine was 20 years old at the time and had a lot of neglected hours on it. When I last saw it running, he was using a 14 X 8 prop on it.
Examining the engine internals, the clearance ramps on the cam were beat up indicative of excessive valve lash and high rpm. The tips of the valve stems were peened over also indicative of a large valve gap and high rpm.
I repaired the engine with a spare valve retainer C-clip from the junk box and it then had good compression.
I gave the engine to Bill Roberson.
So the peened stem kept the valve from dropping all the way into the cylinder (hung up on the valve guide)? Did you have to clean up the stem to remove the valve, if it was bent? If so how? If you reused the valve did you have to true up the retainer grove? If so how?
I used a hone stone the dress down the stem to remove the exhaust valve. It took a while. But i was watching TV also. When the spring retainer came up over the grove, it did a pretty good job of cleaning up the peened flange at the top edge of the groove.
I fiddled with it some to determine that the valve nor the quide were bent.
The engine was consumed in a house fire at Bill Roberson's a couple years later.
