I'm currently making the fake tail skid bungee shock right now. Later I'll be making the brass bands and skid plate that goes on the skid out of aluminum and will be painting it brass do to it's not a working system.
Here's a few pictures so you can get an idea where I'm coming from. The shock is made from 2 rubber o-rings and 2 washers on a aluminum tube. I'll cut out the rest of the hardware later on after the plane is covered and the skid is epoxied in place. I drilled a hole 1/4 of the way in the fuse and skid, so when I glue everything in place, the fake skid bungee shock will add some support to the main skid.
I use the Osprey "Fokker DR1 Aces" as a reference for the fully extended shock look.
