Default RE: Parkzone f4U Corsair Rtf

Dangaras, Squawk, and MWTS -

Thanks for the info. I went to the hobby store yesterday (made it outta there for just under $200 so that's about an average visit I'd say) and bought stock aluminum rods to build up the axle diameter to fit the 5/32" diameter on the Dubro ultra light 2 1/4 " wheels. I also got the brass collars and some stock 5/32" plastic tubing to space out the wheel from vertical part of the landing gear. And I bought a 1" tail wheel (can't remember the make since I'm at work and not at home at the moment) that will will have to drill out the hole to fit the stock gear. I went with the 2 1/4 dia front wheels b/c I thought anything bigger would start to look funny on the F4U. With your suggestions of viewing pages 51/52 of this thread, I read that some guys went with 2 1/2 - 2 3/4 size. I guess it's all based on preference. If these don't work well, I can always go bigger. Another thing I bought were skies to take off/land on snow/ice. We got 6" of snow here in the Salt Lake valley yesterday so already thinking how I'm going to get my fix during the winter. I moved to UT to snowboard but had a bad dirt bike accident 18 months ago and three surgeries later, I'm still limping severely and wearing an orthotic. Hence, no more snowboarding for a while and I've re-discovered RC Planes this year to keep my sanity. I had the Goldberg Electra glider when I was 15 and have been on a 20 year hiatus. Now I'm back and totally addicted to RC Planes! I've bought 5 this year. I will post pics of both mods when I get around to them. Now, i'm focused on my new Airfield P 51 1450mm that I just got on Tuesday.

BTW, on the Corsair I'm running an Eflite Power 10 with a 40amp ESC. Really love the power but concerned about wing bend/stress over time. So, I also bought a couple .125 dia carbon fiber rods to reinforce the wing. I know there's a bunch of stuff on here about wing/fuse reinforcement and need to read up on that before I attempt anything. I've also read that people tape the LE and ends of the wings and horizontal stabilizers. There's the reinforced strapping tape (with the fibers running parallel with the tape) and then just the regular 3M clear packaging tape. Wondering if I just the clear would work (more aesthetically pleasing), or if I should go with the strapping tape (may not look too pretty), or go with both tape and carbon rod reinforcement. Also, wondering if I can "push" the rod in through the tip of the wing or if I have to cut a slit in the wing and tuck it in. Obviously, need to use different pieces to account for the gull. Also, will use my dremel to cut it.

On another note, I did a totally stupid rookie move last night. My Airfield P51came with funky plugs that my local hobby shop doesn't carry. So, as part of my purchasing I bought a Haako soldering station and wanted to convert everything to EC3 plugs so it matches my charger, etc. Well, I had two new "Blue Lipo" 4cell 2200 mah 14.8 v batteries that I was going to change the plugs on. I should have remembered toNEVER cut both wires at the same time. Well, I did the ESC first and that went fine - no power hooked up. Next, onto the 1st battery, cut both wires, sparks flew and short circuited the battery with the pliers. Damn! $40 down the drain. Should cut one wire at a time and install one at a time into the new connector. Oh well, lesson learned by burning $40 and losing the battery. Is it o.k. to through LiPos in the regular garbage or do they need special disposal?

Thanks for reading my rant.

Now back to work!

Toby
