Default Balsa under Glass/Epoxy

Hello everyone,
I'm very new to this aspect of the hobby. Iwould like to glass either one of my foamies, or a all balsa bird, sand fill repeat, just to get that finish that looks so good in a composite frame.
Can anyone reccomend any online sources of glass/resin/hardner? And does Resin have a shelf life?I have a can of it in my garage, but think it is over 5 years old - I guess I'd be better off getting some new resin, huh?(seems a no brainer once Ityped that out).

I have heard and read an article about building a F5B power soarer (I think it is F5B) where in the article he stretched a kevlar or glass sock over the fuse, glassed it, (left the nose open), poured in acetone to disolve the foam and ended up with a completely composite frame. Would this work?
