I know the other guy said to stay away from 4 channel, I don't know that I agree with that. For learning, a top wing that rights itself takes one of the confusing factors out, with ailerons you will loose a lot of the self - righting characteristics that you want on a early trainer. Then after a few planes, switch to ailerons. That way you get the feel a bit more before you start flying a plane that's easier to tip-stall and loose orientation with. That was why my flying friends recommended I start with a elevator/rudder plane, and hold off on the 4 channel aileron planes until I had some stick time. It sounds like he might have had a plane already, if so and he's able to fly it reasonably well, then consider the 4 ch. plane.
