Default Is the Slowstick a good beginner plane?

My vote is for the slow stick. It can be set up with a regular sized radio, inexpensive speed controller-(25.00bucks) and will be slow, and easy to learn on. It won't disintegrate like a glow powered model will when it "lands" hard, or hits something, like a tree, or other vertical surface.
A Hitec Laser 4 is 109.99 from Tower Hobbies. Look around for the speed controller, and use the amperage they recommend in the directions.
Think about the camera thing later, after you have been flying for awhile.

Another suggestion would be the Sky Scooter Pro 2, -plane, radio, battery, charger, all for 160 bucks, and ready to fly in 20 mins.
