RE: Complete new CDI - website open
Hi Iura..
I did manage to replace one of the resonators with the new one with the 15pf capacitors inside and it did work. More on that result later. I also tried a 16mhz. crystal and 2 capacitors with the same results..still working good.
Since it is so cold outside, I hooked everything up to my test engine in the garage and did a startup and 1 minute run at all throttle positions. All good so far..the system seems to work fine now.
I am looking for some new ignition coils (smaller) for my planes. I tried a few Ionizer coils from air purification units that were trashed...most of them produced very weak spark but did run my engine. I found a local electric motor repair shop willing to try winding some very small ignition coils for me. I am making the bobbins from teflon and nylon, and they will wind the #36 gauge wire on them for me after I wind the 15 turns of #26 primary wire. The bobbins have 4 insulated sections.. The first test coil is working but they need to be potted in epoxy for better insulation between the sections.. This was due to the incorrect number of turns between the sections..if one has more turns than the others, it will try to arc between them..but it is progress..Their winding machine didn't have a counter on it..all done by rpm and time of rotations. Hope we get it right soon..wasting alot of wire on the tests!
The ignition and timer tests seemed to produce good results but my PIC chip sockets are getting worn out and aren't giving me solid contacts anymore..Wiggling the chip makes it quit etc.. So I am etching more boards to build...all good fun!
