I tried that too; mounting the engine upside downwould have the exhaust routing problems like you mentioned, plus I will have to adjust both needle valves from the bottom of the cowl. You can't just change the carb over. Like you mentioned, if I turned the engine over and mounted it upside down, I will have the near perfect set-up except for the carb and needle problems.
Short of using a pump and not getting the thrust line wrong, I think there isn't much elseI can do...
