Charlie..
Have you looked at S&S machine's coils on their site? They have a coil for $15 that isn't potted.. I have been looking up every lead on finding out what they were originally used for and finally today I found it. I went to the Whirlpool gas range repair site and low & behold, there they are.. The stovetop electronic igniter boards use 4 of them.
All I have to do now is find one of them on the local dump and I'll have 4 good coils...for free. There's an appliance dealer close by here that may have some removal units I can pilfer thru and locate some also.. They work perfectly up to and a little beyond 10k rpm..perfect for our uses. In fact, the one I tested here was hooked to my dremel and peaked out at 12.5k before the spark quit..
They will fit inside an empty 35mm film container for potting after wiring for HV lead and power connections. Looks like a winner to me!
