You'll need the gearbox upgrade if you want metal tracks, even in stock condition those gears start sounding distressed after a short period of battling [&:]
(But I will take the plastic tracks - and gears too if you replace them before they fail! - off your hands if you want to go that route )

FV432 did an Asiatam upgrade a while back, take a look at what he did.
