I have fitted many engines in planes such as yours with success.The first was a modeltch p47. Great vertical rolling rate. Now that was a nice size cowl the latest is in a BH Models Chipmunk. It has a very tight cowl as you will see in the photos.It is their small Chipmunk. To accomodate a mufller I utilize one of the products that we manufacture.
