The best way to recover is to fly forward and out of your own wash.. usually it recovers immediately... (that is what they teach you in real helis also...)

There is a rule of thumb for real helicopters to avoid entering VRS - When flying less than 30Kts keep your descent rate less than 300 feet per min.
