I added a piece of Aerotrend exhaust tubing as you suggest, it ends about a half inch from the face of the fan, keeps things fairly clean. I used a small metal hose clamp to secure it, rough up the aluminum tubing and the inside of the Aerotrend tubing with sand paper. I did this after reading about it in the jet list archives.
