In thelate 1930stheprototype of this aircraft became the fastest flying single engine fighter thatit'srespective military branchhadat the time. That, along with it's advances in technology meant numerous technical problems had to be soved before it could enter service. It entered servicein 1942 but of major concern was its slowspeed characterstics which played a huge role in its intendedoperating enviroment. Anotherproblem wasthe aircraft's tendency to bounce on landing.Until those problems were corrected, production models were transferred to a"sister" serviceand it wasn't until 1944 that the aircraft was cleared for it's originally intended operating enviroment. The aircraft proved to be one of the most successful fighters of WWII,earning nicknames by bothfriendly and enemy troops. It saw it's finalcombat missionsin 1969during a conflict that was famouslytriggered by a sportsmatch, andin which American pilots with experience in this aircraftwere enlisted to assist one of the countries in that conflict.
