On a structural part like that you'll definitely need to make a doubler to give it strength. butt joints on wood aren't very strong. Use slow setting epoxy (1 hr, preferably) for the repair and make sure there's no paint or fuel proofing on the wood before gluing it. That way the epoxy can soak into the wood a little and make the joint much stronger.
